flyakate: Callum Keith Rennie's head (OMG squee RayK)
The nice thing about the beginning of a new year is that there is always some change in energy, a feeling that bygones should go by, mistakes forgiven, and that all the things that need to be accomplished, can. Kind of fun.

Yuletide Excitement:

This year I got to write in American Gods and since one of the requests was more about any of the gods we meet, I wrote:
In the Land of Fire and Dreams, which was lots of fun to write not only because of my love of the slightly pretentious second person narrative voice but also because I got to poke around and learn lots of random things about early Slavic religion (granted, it was on Wikipedia and similar, so I could be wrong on... all of it). And I got to reference the Great Chicago Fire, which makes my little Diogenes Boys heart happy.

I received
but for the endless ifs by kittu9, which is an amazing story of Bloom and Penelope post-The Brothers Bloom, where they are awkward and real and full of adorableness with each other in a lovely jagged and true kind of way. And there is house renovation! HGTV would get a total kick out of reno-ing with Bloom and Penelope!

And now, some amazing Yuletide recs!

Detailed recs from American Gods, Jane Austen's Fight Club, Grimm, Sahara, The Holiday, Clueless, Song of Ice & Fire, Mary Poppins, Aladdin, Chaos Walking trilogy and Muppet Show/Alton Brown RPF )

And, because January comes right after December (same every year!) I had a birthday! My friends threw me a party and it was awesome and filled with cake and presents. I had what felt like 800 birthday celebrations, between my friends and various groupings of my family. Love it.

I've been busy with work (tutoring and setting up the possibility of an early morning aide in kindergarten, oh and reading all the applications ever) but right now I have the cold of doom. Which means that instead of being productive I've been watching bad tv movies on Lifetime (I've learned way too much about teen issues today) and coding the heck out of this.

Oh, almost forgot, if you haven't seen it you should go check out my dashed off "what if Arthur/Eames were on Facebook?" fic that got 300 hits in a day and half. Inception is still the new black, friends. Forgotten how intense writing in popular fandoms in in regards to feedback. So, go see
The Power of Social Media, it amuses me.

As previously stated, I am
[personal profile] flyakate  at DW, add me!

Ok, this post has been sitting on my computer for 800 days, finally posting it. Yay.

Ok, so I should be packing--as I'm pretty sure Younger Sister is very dedicated to leaving tomorrow for the parents' house--but [livejournal.com profile] musesfool posted a link to an amazing vid of The West Wing and I had to share it... and two others.

Rec Triad: Pop-up Video Version (December 2009)

* Rise by [livejournal.com profile] chaila42 - This video is an amazing look at the whole Bartlet cabinet through about season 4. I haven't seen this show in forever, but this single-handedly forced me to pull out my dvds to pack them, because lord is this a great show. The way the vidder has cut scene to word is genius; I had to watch it twice. (The West Wing, gen)

* One Girl Revolution by [livejournal.com profile] arefadedaway - How about a 155 girl revolution? No, seriously. This multi-fandom video looks at the plain old kick-assed-ness of female characters in fandom. Which fandom? A whole lot of them. Does an excellent job of matching beat to scene and picks out some nice moments from lots of shows.

* Dude! My Googlefu is awesome! I have found my third rec (because imeem has been swallowed up by MySpace which is gross and sad): In the Mirror by [livejournal.com profile] heresluck which is genius (all of her vid's are genius) and the timing is so sharp and the little touches of Ray Kowalski and the clenching of his jaw at Fraser is just... perfect. RayK/Fraser and lovely.

I win the internet and now to bed! *falls over*

Fortunately, Younger Sister has decided we're leaving early Friday morning. I can sleep the sleep of the victorious! Bring me the finest bagels in all the land when I awake! The end.

It has been months since I've done this, but here: have the All Fic Edition of the Rec Triad.

Rec Triad June 2009

I've been catching up on The Mentalist, which is an adorably quirky show with fun characters about a mentalist who uses his crazy observational skills (and charming adorable sexiness personality) to help solve crime. If you watch the show, you will enjoy this fic immensely: Red Tables Turning. Don't be alarmed by its placement on fanfiction.net--although after reading this one I totally took a spin through some more and woah, at times it was painful, yet hilarious. But, the story linked above gives a great outside view of Patrick Jane and how he acts when our favorite guys from the BAU show up to talk about Red John. I was not expecting the crossover insanity, and it was fun. Only two chapters, but I'd love a long, meaty look at how they'd help finally (I mean, seriously, guys, on Criminal Minds they find serial killers all the time in approximately 40 minutes, you haven't done it in 23 episodes!)

In a different vein, apparently I not only enjoy believable and interesting AU ideas (whether this means "and Hotch and Rossi have been together since he divorced Haley, trufax" or "hey, the BAU is all in the circus!"*) I just read a bandom AU fic (shut up, don't judge me) where Professor Gerard falls for Frank his hot TA (these guys are all from My Chemical Romance, fyi) which was tons of fun and cute. So go read [livejournal.com profile] jezrana's "In Which Gerard Is a Quirky College Professor and Frank Is the Best TA Ever", parts 1, 2, and 3 (with more drabbles here).

This got me thinking about other Professor!AUs, which reminded me that I loved the Due South version where Fraser and Kowalski teach English Lit (Punk Academic); this love of professor/colleague/pretty much equal dynamic goes a long way towards explaining my own Elementary!verse stories.

But there has to be a story where John shows up as Rodney's crazy-haired TA who seems to have no background in the hard sciences but then busts out with some genius theory during TA hours (which Rodney monitors, just to make sure it wouldn't be a totaly disaster) and the way John's hands sketch the arcs of a mathematical curve makes Rodney's throat dry. Isn't there one? I have such a great mental image of this... help me out, guys!

*Not that there is a BAU-inna-circus!AU, but there definitely should be. Think of it: Reid wows as the Smartest Man in the World! Prentiss doing gymnastics atop a horse, or something! Morgan the Strong Man! Garcia as the awesome girl behind the scenes! Hotch as the hard-working and stressed owner of the circus and Rossi as the old co-owner that left years ago after a disastrous show but is back now for some "unfinished business"! I think this could work well...
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Sky fetish Pirates quote)
Because this list has been sitting on one of those awesome electronic post-its on my my Mac "dashboard" for like a week now, I finally bring you another

REC TRIAD, JUNE 2008!!!

A Book:
So I was at Borders with M last week, er rather last weekend, and I saw a book with the COOLEST. COVER. EVER. When I picked it up and started reading the first couple of pages, it was pretty awesome, so borrowed it from the library and read it in about... a day. It's the kind of book about superheroes that Rodney from [livejournal.com profile] sardonicsmiley's Sky High AU would tell (to use a geeky fanficcish reference). It is from the point of view of Dr. Impossible, a super-villian (or is he just misunderstood?) and Fatale, a cyborg-woman who is talked into joining the "New" Champions after one of their members goes missing. If you love comic books and superheroes (and really, who doesn't?) at least give it a shot. (Amazon link) (Wikipedia entry)

A Site:
A friend of mine from frisbee was telling me about a cool hobby he and his fiancee are into called "letterboxing". Not knowing what it was, I had to go find out, and thought it was so COOL sounding that you all would love to hear about it too. Basically, you follow clues people post online about a secret "box" and when you find it, there's a stamp and a book inside, so you can stamp your "Letterbox collection" to show you were there, and (using a stamp YOU have) stamp the book to show you found it. It's kind of like geocaching except it doesn't rely on GPS locators but clues (of varying difficulty). I haven't tried letterbox hunting yet, but doesn't it sound fun? (Official site here)

A Show
As I've begun to realize, I kind of watch too much tv. Also, reality shows, but only the kind that I can classify as "non-trashy", which I realize it a very subjective line. However, I only like the "real" shows where people are there to display a talent (Project Runway, Top Chef, etc.) as opposed to just "being" (Real Housewives of Orange County, etc.). Which isn't to say that I didn't watch Real World back in the day, but regardless. The newest season of So You Think You Can Dance is starting up again on FOX, and it's an awesome, awesome show. I got into it last season because of Younger Sister and my mom and it's really fun to see some of the dances and the songs and especially to see how much better people get throughout the competition. Some of the stuff these dancers can do is nothing short of unreal. Like (last season): Danny and Lacey dancing the samba, Pasha and Lauren dancing hip-hop, the top 20 doing a group dance from The Lion King, or anything that Neil does. Like dance Jazz. This season looks pretty unreal too: check out Katee and Joshua or Twitch and Kherington.

*

Whew, I remember now why I rarely do these, especially with all the coding. My poor fingers! XD
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Blood runs thickest Dexter)
Wow, I'm always so absent-minded about these! So, because they're fun, I bring you the first

REC TRIAD OF 2008!

A Fic:
I sort of forget if I ever told you about this, but approximately a million years ago, [livejournal.com profile] villainny recced multiple bandom fics. "Bandom" is a cute phrase for fandom that has sprung up around, in this case, Panic! at the Disco (I'm keeping the exclamation point because it's cute), My Chemical Romance, and Fall Out Boy. Even if you don't know their music (which is sad, because they're quite fun) the story Wednesday Night Boys takes a fanfic cliche (the one where they're all hookers) and makes it awesome.

A Book:
Anything by Josephine Tey. XD? I just finished reading several of her books, which are mysteries that aren't always concerned with the normal 'dead body' kind of mystery. The Man in the Queue is excellent, The Singing Sands is really interesting, and The Daughter of Time is a neat look at a mystery in history. Those all have the same detective, though her other ones are really cool too. So go read them!

A Show:
Over the holiday break, my older brother decided to catch up on the second season of Dexter, because our parents have cable on demand, and he'd gotten hooked while visiting our Second Oldest Sister. So we all spent many early morning hours staying up and saying "well... just one more". It's kind of violent and dark show about a serial killer who hides himself by working as a blood spatter analyst for the police in Miami. Don't worry... he only kills bad guys ;o) What makes this show for me is the humor and sarcasm behind it all. Most of the show is narrated by Dexter's internal voice, which is sharp and hysterically dry and lovely when juxtaposed with the action onscreen. All the rest of the characters are really interesting, and it's tons of fun. So go rent/Netflix the first season, or dig it up somewhere. Great bloody* fun.

*In the American vernacular, that is XD

MTV keeps showing reruns of old America's Next Top Model seasons, which I shouldn't find captivating, but I DO. However, I get to go to teach school tomorrow, which is mostly sit there and reign over the middle schoolers as they finish essays for their finals week. Think I'll bring my computer, just in case...

How's with all you?
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (All the roads lead me there Sam and Dean)
Combing through the many things I've found lately (all of a procrastinatory nature, of course), I bring you the following three things for this month's rec triad:

Triad for September 2007

A Fic:
I've read lots of great ones lately (and told you about Written by the Victors only yesterday) but here's a fascinating fic that I hope I haven't told you about before. turn your sail (never say we die) by [livejournal.com profile] fahye is a great post-Pirates of the Caribbean: at World's End fic which looks at how Will's life (or not) continues. Also, a very successful second person POV, which is always so hard to pull off. Excellent and cool and does a great job with all the characters.

A Site:
If you grew up when I did, you probably remember all those "old" games you could play on your Macs, and perhaps you remember playing games on DOS (though I was young enough that only my brother was allowed to type it in, we just had to watch 'cause we'd probably screw up the commands). Thought you'd never see Prince of Persia again? Never fear! Abandonia is a great site that has downloads of all those ridiculously pixelated games, as well as links to emulators so you can run DOS, etc. on our fancy current technology. Too hysterical, and wow, wastes so much time. It's great ;o)

A Show:
Every small town needs a sheriff, but in the town of Eureka, the sheriff has a harder job than most... seeing as the population of (almost entirely) mad scientists keep doing weird things like making stuff invisible, or cloning people. Ooops? If you haven't watched Eureka on the SciFi channel, you totally should. It's cheesy, like all sci-fi, but has an excellent sense of its own cheese for the most part. Check out the Sci-Fi website with adorable animations. As a bonus pimp: here are some awesome SGA/Eureka crossover fics recced by [livejournal.com profile] tropes here, here, and here. ALSO, at the amazing website "Stage6" (which saves my tv watching life always) is the first season, which I am just about to watch. *boogies*

*

Labyrinth school again tomorrow (and all this week). Now, if only I could decide on what to make for lunch...

flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Wrapped up in books)
Because I'd never really thought about how cool it was, I bring you the Rec Triad, Steampunk Version.

A Site:
The Wikipedia entry on steampunk including lists of lots of books that I want to read. Basically, it's Victorian-age fiction based on the idea that the steam engine (among other things) was invented long before it actually was. Alternate Universe of the ultimate kind. Fascinating idea.

A "Magazine":
It's a magazine that claims to "put the punk back in steam punk". Which I think is hysterical and cool. I haven't read all the fic yet, but it's really well written. Best yet? It's free and printable, and also seeks submissions. God love technology and online 'zines.

A "Movie":
So, there's the movie Hackers, which is mildly terrible and has Angelina Jolie and Johnny Lee Miller. Someone thought, "hey... hackers of computers. How about creators of machines harassing the world?" So there is Clockers, which is both a script and also a reading on mp3 that I haven't listened to yet. Interesting idea.

Watching Hackers, which is... mildly crappy. Mostly because Fisher Stevens creeps me out (seriously, dude, being in Super Mario Bros. was probably never a good idea. Although BOB HOSKINS was in it too, wow). There are also crappy "craaaazy computer effects" which are more distracting than entertaining. But hey, amusing.
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (All bloodied up and no one to kill King/)
A weird kind of rec triad, but here are three vidoes that I find really captivating. Ironically, two of them are by the same person. Mostly, I just really enjoy how well the music and the images fit. And this way I can have them all in the same place the next time they get stuck in my head.

* Us by lim, a multifandom video set to "Us" by Regina Spektor. Again the manipulation of video is fascinating and surreal and wtfamazing. And the end almost makes me cry.

* This is How It Works by lim again, a McShep video set to "On the Radio" by Regina Spektor (...again). I love the beat of this song, and the images click well. It's a companion to a glorious fic that I've also recced: freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose. *sniffle*

* Bro-Yay: Supernatural/Boondock Saints by hopeonarope. Set to the theme from The Last of the Mohicans. The parallels are astounding between the brothers. Why is there not more crossover fic, I ask you? *sigh* Think of the pretty, please.

So go! Watch! Drool. Get these damn songs stuck in your head like I have. I? Have to go to bed.
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (All bloodied up and no one to kill King/)
I know I just did one of these, but I totally have to tell you how great the following things are, so I bring you yet another REC TRIAD (just picture me saying this like "piiiiiiiiiiigs in spaaaaaaaaaaaaaace")

Rec Triad!!!

A Song (among many):
Even though I haven't seen 300 yet, the music is fantastic. It's like house-techno-Middle Eastern-operatic-mastery of awesomeness. Gorgeous, and might make me actually see the movie. :o) So check it out. Review and listing here :o)

A Book:
Ever think that Greek myths should still occur now, with the whole gods and goddesse gettin' it on with mortals and siring demigods? Well, then you should read The Lightning Thief by Rick Ricordan, because Percy just discovered that the world is a lot closer to his Ancient History text than not... Hysterical first person narration and any and all classics geeks will love the in-jokes and side references to myths and sundry. Link to Amazon here.

A Movie:
This weekend [livejournal.com profile] rhymester and I watched Blood Diamond and it was amazing. First of all, the story is fascinatingly raw, the violent history of Sierra Leone and diamond smuggling and civil upheaval, etc. But then there's also the awe-inspring Djimon Hounsou, and Jenifer Connelley, and a stunning performance by Leonardo diCaprio (with a spot-on white African accent; at one point he even speaks an amazing dialect-language type thing... very fun). Sad and violent, but really interesting movie. And I have this new (ish) thing for movies and stuff about Africa.

Rec Triad

flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Wrapped up in books)
Wow, it's been... two months (???) since I've done this, so here we go, the lovely Rec Triad. You missed it. You know you've missed it. Stop denying it to yourself XD

A Fic:
This is really multiple fics recced into one, because if you haven't heard of [livejournal.com profile] copperbadge's "Stealing Harry" Harry Potter AU universe, there woah, click the first chapter of "Stealing Harry" here. It's based on the premise that Sirius (and Remus) got lost on the way to finding Peter Pettigrew, and Lucius Malfoy is in Azkaban for killing Peter instead. There is a bookshop. And a toy named Frog. And, be warned, some adorably hot Sirius/Remus eventually. Sam's working his way through the books now (he's in the middle of year three) and they're fantastic. So if you have lots of free time, read them.

A Movie:
Shattered Glass, which is based on the true story of Stephen Glass, a writer/editor for the New Republic magazine who, it turned out later, fabricated over half of his stories either in part or entirely. Hadyn Chrstiansen is Glass, smarmily and hottly convincing, and there are lots of great names playing "supporting cast" (Hank Azaria is awesome as one of his head editors, as is Peter Sarsgaard, who you might remember as John Malkovich's son in Man in the Iron Mask. Brilliant, the pair of them). I caught it on tv a couple weeks ago and couldn't stop watching it.

A Book:
I just finished two books by SARK, and I really recommend the Bodacious Book of Succulence (her website is here), which is joyously entertaining in a soulful sort of way. Mostly, her books are great because they are all handwritten, literally the pages looks like notes you make in class, with little doodles and jots and pictures. They're just pretty and amusing to have around. I was reading it before bed and her books always cheer me up. So go check them out.

*

Off to do some homework by the water, because it's gorgeous out. Have a lovely Sunday, everyone!

Rec Triad

Feb. 25th, 2007 02:47 pm
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Wrapped up in books)
I used to do this a lot and I feel that it's a travesty that I haven't. So, here is the long-lost, oft missed Rec Triad, where I tell you about three things that you're clearly missing out on. In this case, a Fic, a Site and a... Book.

A Fic:
Wide Open Ocean by [livejournal.com profile] setissma. It's a SG:A John/Rodney fic, but told in such a way that I loved it to pieces even though I've never watched the show. See, instead of working at the SGC, John has always dreamt of working with dolphins and other denizens of the sea, while Rodney is a slightly cranky scientist he meets down the road. Gorgeous language and description, which really pulls Tai's love of all things watery and Chicago into the mix. Go read it, it's beautiful (and John and Rodney are great).

A Site:
Slightly less cheerful but no less interesting is this website about the Not for Sale Campaign, which is working to end modern day slavery. It's happening in countries around the world and, as you read in these stories, sometimes even down the street. A worthy cause, and food for thought.

A Book:
If you've never had time for reading classic mysteries, then you're missing out. Take a few minutes and pick up an Agatha Christie; I especially recommend Murder on the Orient Express. It's a very engaging read and I really like Hercule Poirot as a detective, if only because his cases are frequently solvable only by him. There are a whole mess more, but I especially liked this one.
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Poker with the Duckboys)
That time again! The wonder that is the rec triad. I know you've been quivering in antici...pation. *grin* Don't lie. It's perfectly clear. So, anyway, to liven up your July days, I greatly recommend the following Rec Triad:

Book:

Someone, on some site, mentioned that they "had to read To Say Nothing of the Dog because someone had told them it was full of Peter Wimsey allusions". This stuck in my mind and so I picked it up due to a Six Degrees of Separation sort of thing. All Wimsey aside (no pun intended), it's a really fascinating sci-fi timetravelly fantasy thing, that reads a little like a Wildean romance written by Jasper Fforde. Now that's a description you don't see very often, huh? If you've ever wondered about the payoffs and problems in time travel, or if you are amused/entertained by Jeeves/Wooster type stories, pick this up.

Fic:
Punk Academic by Hoyden. It's a Due South AU, Fraser/Kowalski, NC-17. Simply put, it casts Fraser as a new profesor in the English department of a Chicago university, with "Ray as an openly gay professor in his department and Stella as the headmistress". Yes, you read that correctly, but I swear it's a fabulous fic, as cracked out as that concept may sound. Some AUs thrust the characters into some situation and they lose all what made them that character (you know you've read them), but this one lets Ray and Fraser be exactly who they were... if they had been English professors. Also amusing because of the slightly cynical and sarcastic take on teaching it gives. I wish Ray had been one of my professors in college *swoon*

Song:

In honor of my renewed love of Ocean's 11, I give you A Little Less Conversation (A Little More Action) by Elvis Presley. OMG I love this song. Also, I am finding Paul Anka's swingy Big Band cover of Oasis' Wonderwall (you wouldn't think it would work) extremely appropriate for creating the correct mood for my O11 caper fic I am writing.

**

Wow, my sub-theme this time should be "You Wouldn't Think This Would Work/Be Good, But..."

Life continues apace, and I feel that clarity about the shape of the rest of my summer will surface soon. Maybe tomorrow. Which will also include the wonderful bizzarity that is Sweeney Todd with [livejournal.com profile] rhymester and one of [livejournal.com profile] alemara's friends. Joy! I shall attend the tale of Sweeney Todd! This should not amuse me so much...

Oh, and Due South-influence GIP. For those who know, it's from "You Must Remember This"when Fraser, Ray, Huey and Louis are playing poker... with matchsticks. Because Fraser would report them for gambling with real money. *snerk*
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Kiddy Hands)
Today in the life of Flyakate, grownup by night and faux-schoolkid by day, I get to go on a field trip to a museum! Or rather, part of a museum. I'm intrigued, and a little amused by the though of my class to twenty-somethings all getting to wander around together.

The reunion (as [livejournal.com profile] alemara and [livejournal.com profile] rhymester have told you) was lots of fun and reminded me (intensely?) of how much I love Western Massachusettes. It was also fantastic to run into several old teachers I had and had missed: I know remember where my liberal tendencies came from *smirk* Also, Ms. Correct (names changed to amuse me later) had two small boys! They are FABULOUS and adorable and like leaping off picnic tables. Like you do. I also got to see Mr. and Mrs. [livejournal.com profile] alemara (Mrs. was overjoyed that I am going to teach. It was the height of cuteness) as well as many people I'd forgotten I'd known well in high school. My facebook friendslist has grown, as has my AIM buddies. Yay technology XD

***

Because it has been so long since I've done this, and I find it entertaining, I bring you the glorious tryptych of a Book, a Fic and a Song (just to mix things up):

Book:

A glorious novel, Sophie's World by Jostein Gaarder. It's a "novel about the history of philosophy" and both gives you a great sense of the connection between past and present philosophical thought and creates a neat little mystery-type story. A lot of the tone and the main character remind me of The Saskiad by Brian Hall (which I reccomend if you haven't read it, especially as a better bildunsroman/coming-of-age novel than Catcher in the Rye). Will tell you more when I've actually finished it.

Fic:

Awww, Kalyee/Mal. "From Horizon to Horizon" by [livejournal.com profile] musesfool: Part 1 and Part 2. It's like 15,000 words but it's absolutely tight and a wonderful read. I love our characterization of the whole crew.

Song:

Because everyone should experience the bizzare-aweomse, here is a cover of Bob Marley's Redemption Song... by Johnny Cash. His voice is perfect for it, and almost makes me cry every time I hear it.

***

Does anyone have "Come a Little Bit Closer" (come a little bit closer, you're my kind of man, so big and so strong)? It's been stuck in my head for YEARS and I would love you forever if it was found. Although I suppose I could go to iTunes and... y'know, get a copy. But where's the fun in that? XD

Off to my field trip uptown. Yay being near Central Park!

Hope all is well (or will be well, as all manner of things will be well).
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Memories in Sand)
It kind of weirds me out that my last post here was me ranting about the movie adaptation of A Wrinkle in Time. huh. Why I haven't written since then is beyond me, actually. I mean, I've been busy with school-type things and being in CT and then NYC and how that always stresses me out, like I must equaly parcel out the time between the two evenly. Though, clearly, I must just stop feeling guilty that I'm one place and not the other.

So, in a effort to create cheer (especially as lots of people I know have had a BAAAAD week. Fortunately not so much me) I bring you: a link, a fic, and a book.

The Link:
Pandora, from the Music Genome Project is one of the coolest websites I've seen in a long time. Did you ever s it there while listening to a song you liked and think "wouldn't it be great to listen to other music like this?" Well, now you can. You tell them a particular song or artist, and they will compile (from their database of over 300,000 songs from more than 10,000 artists) music that shares commonalities in chord structure, tone, melody, etc. And then make a little radio station of it for you. Great for discovering new artists or links between old ones.

The Fic:
The Way Around, the Way Through (HP/Firefly; Remus, River, G) by [livejournal.com profile] musesfool. It's her most recent fic that works with these two lovely fandoms in a crossover (if you haven't go read A Million Light Years From Home, which is heartbreakingly gorgeous as well) and really nails both River's voice and Remus. Not really happyfic, but hopeful towards the end.

The Book:
Summerland by Michael Chabon tells the story of Ethan Feld, the worst little league ballplayer in the history of Clam Island, Washington. This tragedy is compounded by the fact that on Clam Island, baseball is a way of life, aided by the fact that the tip of the island is perpetually sunny all summer long (the locals call it Summerland). Yet rain has started to fall in Summerland, and Ethan joins a ridiculously fantastical group of almost-heroes (including a female Sasquatch and a ferisher, or fairy) to save all the worlds from the terrible Coyote. While this is a book for young readers, I'm really enjoying the mix of cultural history, baseball legends and fantasy that Chabon is creating. I haven't finished it yet, but I definitely recommend picking it up and giving it a shot (I borrowed it from the library).

[livejournal.com profile] alemara, I should be done with your chapter by tonight, so I will send it along, yes? And I most likely will get to help edit Younger Sister's thesis as well, as it's due tomorrow. Yikes.

Hope everyone's enjoying the sunshine (if you're on my part of the globe, that is).
