The nice thing about the beginning of a new year is that there is always some change in energy, a feeling that bygones should go by, mistakes forgiven, and that all the things that need to be accomplished, can. Kind of fun.

Yuletide Excitement:

This year I got to write in American Gods and since one of the requests was more about any of the gods we meet, I wrote:
In the Land of Fire and Dreams, which was lots of fun to write not only because of my love of the slightly pretentious second person narrative voice but also because I got to poke around and learn lots of random things about early Slavic religion (granted, it was on Wikipedia and similar, so I could be wrong on... all of it). And I got to reference the Great Chicago Fire, which makes my little Diogenes Boys heart happy.

I received
but for the endless ifs by kittu9, which is an amazing story of Bloom and Penelope post-The Brothers Bloom, where they are awkward and real and full of adorableness with each other in a lovely jagged and true kind of way. And there is house renovation! HGTV would get a total kick out of reno-ing with Bloom and Penelope!

And now, some amazing Yuletide recs!

Detailed recs from American Gods, Jane Austen's Fight Club, Grimm, Sahara, The Holiday, Clueless, Song of Ice & Fire, Mary Poppins, Aladdin, Chaos Walking trilogy and Muppet Show/Alton Brown RPF )

And, because January comes right after December (same every year!) I had a birthday! My friends threw me a party and it was awesome and filled with cake and presents. I had what felt like 800 birthday celebrations, between my friends and various groupings of my family. Love it.

I've been busy with work (tutoring and setting up the possibility of an early morning aide in kindergarten, oh and reading all the applications ever) but right now I have the cold of doom. Which means that instead of being productive I've been watching bad tv movies on Lifetime (I've learned way too much about teen issues today) and coding the heck out of this.

Oh, almost forgot, if you haven't seen it you should go check out my dashed off "what if Arthur/Eames were on Facebook?" fic that got 300 hits in a day and half. Inception is still the new black, friends. Forgotten how intense writing in popular fandoms in in regards to feedback. So, go see
The Power of Social Media, it amuses me.

As previously stated, I am
[personal profile] flyakate  at DW, add me!

Ok, this post has been sitting on my computer for 800 days, finally posting it. Yay.

I am about several beers down and so I apologize for any missteps and misspellings because tht would be awkard.

---

Sadly, this all of the post that I made last night before I wandered off (I was waiting to use the bathroom and then it was free and then I forgot to come back here. Sad.) though I hadn't drunk tons, but enough for me. Younger Sister and Roommate had multiple people over and there was much throwing of ping pong balls into Solo cups.

This afternoon I went on a lovely walk (greatly enjoying the sunshine in SF today despite/because of the wind) and wandered around the "heart" of Noe Valley, aka 24th street. Lots of funky stores and nice to get two miles of exercise in an easy way.

In totally random exciting news, after some judicious Googling, I found an entertaining cooking class (good food and meeting people! what multi-tasking!), so on the 20th of March I will learn how to make handmade pasta, which is kind of hilarious and awesome. In a similar vein, I emailed Second Oldest Sister to see if she needed/wanted help/company/child-wrangling during my spring break, which means that there might be more delicious food-making (she runs a B&B) or at least food-eating, in my future :o)

Last night I made pizza (granted, with Pillsbury dough inna can) with mushrooms, so that will most likely be dinner.

Catching up on The Mentalist, my totally non-spoilery comment: I LOVE CHO TO PIECES. Even though we had never seen his girlfriend before and everyone acted like they knew her; that's always odd.

I am now current in Criminal Minds as well; David Rossi rocks my socks and also spoilers for 5.16 Mosley Lane ) In addition, Reid is looker handsomer by the day, seriously.

Now we are watching a recent episode of CSI: New York and oh, Flack, I missed you. Danny, you too. Lindsey, not so much. XD

I have some sort of cold (at least I think it's a cold) most likely from teaching all last week for a teacher who was out with a cold/flu/bronchitis/plague. So my nose is stuffy and it's making me a little headachy to day, which is fun.

I spent a couple hours this afternoon making tabs on my browser of all the job listings in schools nearby, so I can have one big "write cover letter, add resume and SEND" party, as it were.

Man, my head hurts. I was planning on going to see a friend's play tonight (a one-man show about Jeffrey Dahmer! It's so bizarrely cool!) but I feel kind of like crap.

*

I started this entry a couple hours ago, and in the interim I had some painkillers and caffeine and real food, all of which helped to mostly kill the headache. So that's good. Huge bummer that I don't get to go see my friend be a serial killer, but such is life. At least it's open for the next weekend (this and the next one too) so hopefully I'll make it out. There's a production of RENT at Fort Mason that I'd love to see also, so I will have to try hard to get out and get a ticket.

Also, Oldest Sister is coming down for the weekend, so that will be fun!
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (All the roads lead me there Sam and Dean)
I am dog-sitting for a friend (the dog is awesome and named Bogey and he looks mostly like this but older and more white on his face) and it's been a good time. They get back tomorrow, so mostly I've been watching lots of Olympics shenanigans, going randomly shopping (it's like a mini-vacation!) and... sleeping. Mmm, sleeping.

Today I was walking down the street (my friend lives in the town I lived in before San Francisco, so it was nicely nostalgic) and I wandered around in Pensey's Spices (...and bought some hot chocolate mix, so sue me) and really, it was enough like a place where Rodney the semelier (thank you forever, [livejournal.com profile] aesc!) would rave at the customers with slouchy John in the corner. There was a decided lack of either of them in reality, sadly.

I bought some lovely flowers at the farmer's market--some look like a small daffodil while the others are white and nicely fragrant--for 2 dollars for 20, so it's been a good day.

I woke up with a sore throat and stuffy nose though; guess I didn't totally survive the week of teaching in the classroom where the teacher was out with a flu-brochitis-ew plague unscathed. Oh well.

Happy Valentine's Day, everyone! I hope you are having a good weekend (and that you don't have to work on President's Day, that'd be nice) and are spending the day with friends or loved ones or yourself. Or your dog-for-the-weekend, if you're me :o) But I'm pretty sure I'm Bogey's valentine, so what more could I want? XD

&hearts &hearts &hearts

Also, all these ads of parents driving their kids to hockey practices always made me teary. 'Cause though it was soccer (and softball and fencing lessons and flute and tons more) that was totally my mom. Parents don't get enough credit, man. *sniffle*

Christmas morning was late in the Flyakate family household, which worked out just fine. We also took the time to watch everyone else open up a present so that it stretched out the actual present-opening time quite nicely. I am greatly excited because not only did I get a lovely new messenger bag (that I had picked out from Macy's known about) and Bones season 2, but a hilarious spatula shaped like a gingerbread man, a "Cookie Field Guild" and "Muffin Bible" from Older Sister, one of those awesome plunger measuring cups (though not this one) and a pastry board from Younger Sister, an "Interactive Sherlock Holmes mystery" from Older Brother and...

A KITCHEN AID MIXER!!! See how pretty?

I already have made cookies using it (or rather, using Mom's, so mine can stay in its box for the trek back North when I go) and made delicious gingerbread cookies ALL BY MYSELF (though Younger Sister was instrumental in optimizing the cookie cutter spacing and insuring that I had a system for chilling the dough the longest (she likes to organize things, what can I say?)

And Pete the cat got catnip and was hilarious.

But I also got [livejournal.com profile] yuletide stories! Not one. Not even two. THREE WHOLE STORIES, which I will tell you about:

* Comfort (Lie to Me, Gillian/Cal, PG-13) is a lovely look at the true affection that the two of them have for each other and how they lean on each other after a hard case.

* Unwind (Lie to Me, Loker/Torres, PG-13) is a companion story (eee!) where Loker and Torres have a very in-character discussion about why they do what they do with some UST (which might become resolved, hard to say). Very cute and I loved it too!

Also (because the world and Yuletide writers love me):

* can't steal happiness (Mary Russell - LR King, Holmes and Rusell, G) which explains how Mary learns how to pick pockets and hold her own in a discussion with Holmes. The author seemed worried that it didn't fit the timeline, but I have no problem believing that Holmes would let Russell help on a case, even early in their relationship. Lovely and sounds like a lost bit of the novels.

Also, my recipient liked their story! Woo!

So, anyone want a muffin recipe? Or short drabble of your choice in the fandoms I know? (Relatedly, apparently [livejournal.com profile] sga_santa is having drabble madness until January 1st, open to all! Perhaps Elementary!verse boys will have to make an appearance...) I am open to suggestions!

:o) Happy holidays!

Espresso Chocolate Shortbread Cookies

I so don't have the patience (or, um, the kitchen equipment) to make these. But they sound awesome.

However, the next time I'm at the store (to buy a butternut squash and an onion and vegetable stock, so as to make delicious soup a la [livejournal.com profile] dogeared, I miiiiiight just buy chocolate powder to make Brownie Roll Out Cookies.

Because YUM.

Also, I'm excited to get back home today because I started watching V for Vendetta last night (for great timeliness of November the 5th, naturally) and didn't finish it, so there will be more revolutions and dancing and mask-wearing awesomeness tonight!

Also also, Older Brother might be coming through town and stay at our place!!!! Woooooo.

Take care of the journals, kids, because I am off to the Grande Family Reunion of 2009, where I predict there will be lots of guitars, laughter, and a high chance of me, Younger Sister and two Cousins singing Disney songs.

Will be back on Sunday, so let me know if I miss anything good!

Bandaids are in the closet, towels next to the sink, haha. :o)

There aren't enough words for how much I should be sleeping, but just posting this to say that Remix has been revealed and I wrote...

Postcards from the Edge (Three Chord Overdub) [Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Oz, PG]

For me was written...

Just Breathe (The Artifact of Vision Remix) [Stargate: Atlantis, John/Rodney, PG] by the awesomely talented [livejournal.com profile] crysothemis

And a rec that you should read...

a sam adams moment, which is a John POV gen SGA/Bones AU by [livejournal.com profile] siriaeve that is brilliant and perfect and makes me want to mash those two worlds together forever. A million &hearts

This story made today top yesterday (where the waiter and busboy of our restaurant asked Younger Sister if she was Ellen Page from Juno), so in other words, this weekend was awesome (despite cold of Impending Doom)

XD
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Wrapped up in books)
So one of my campers is reading The Westing Game as a school assigned summer reading book and I was Googling around to see if there were any useful websites or games. And then I found that Ellen Raskin donated all her manuscript and draft notes to UW-Madison so that students could see the process of writing a novel and creating cover art and page layouts. Some genius has turned it into a website with all the scanned pages. There's even audio clips of her speaking about the materials (which I haven't listened to, but I'm sure they're awesome too). I love that book to pieces when I was younger and even more upon each rereading and I'm sure many of you did too, so go check out The Westing Game Manuscript!

The first week of camp is over (we got today off because it's a holiday weekend) and it's been a lot of fun. Even though I'm only consistently there in the afternoon (there's summer school in the morning and camp in the afternoon, with less academic-focused activities) it's been so hot and there's so much running around that it sort of drains you and so I've been exhausted all week. Still, my campers are really sweet, friendly, hilarious kids (even when they're too noisy and don't listen) so the times when we don't have super scheduled stuff to do and are just hanging out and drawing or they're listening to a book (at the moment it is Matilda by Roald Dahl, because there was no outpouring of negative reaction and it was one of close-to-the-right age books that I had on my shelf) it's a lot of fun.

In the holiday weekend, I most likely will head out of the city to my aunt and uncle's apparently notorious 4th of July party and am extremely excited, in no small part because I know the food will be awesome :o)

My tongue is coated a funny color and I have a sore, sore throat. Guess I didn't escape Martin's plague after all :o( Regardless, I am off to Sacramento for the weekend for a family extravaganza for Mother's Day, including grandparents and all two aunt/uncle branches of that side of the family ([livejournal.com profile] capedcrusader92, I will say hi and I'm sure they will come up with a life plan for you by Sunday. Be warned.) AND cousins that I haven't seen because they're at school/work/etc. So it will be fun, I hope, if nothing else because my family is hilarious and hysterical and lovely.

I haven't decided if I'm bringing my computer yet, but I'm guessing internet will be scarce, so I will see you all on Sunday?

[livejournal.com profile] trifles, I plan to bring out your story and bring it with me, never fear. Drinking + Gothic Horror is always a win, right? :D
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Teachers do it)
It wouldn't fit, but the subject line is a quote from Bill Cosby :o)

Another Silverstein because [livejournal.com profile] winkingstar reminded me! Also, because this reminds me of every kid when I substitute teach, who are mysteriously felled by bizarre ailments (my tongue itches! my elbow hurts!) right after recess.

Sick - Shel Silverstein

"I cannot go to school today,"
Said little Peggy Ann McKay.
"I have the measles and the mumps,
A gash, a rash and purple bumps.
My mouth is wet, my throat is dry,
I'm going blind in my right eye.
My tonsils are as big as rocks,
I've counted sixteen chicken pox
And there's one more--that's seventeen,
And don't you think my face looks green?
My leg is cut--my eyes are blue--
It might be instamatic flu.
I cough and sneeze and gasp and choke,
I'm sure that my left leg is broke--
My hip hurts when I move my chin,
My belly button's caving in,
My back is wrenched, my ankle's sprained,
My 'pendix pains each time it rains.
My nose is cold, my toes are numb.
I have a sliver in my thumb.
My neck is stiff, my voice is weak,
I hardly whisper when I speak.
My tongue is filling up my mouth,
I think my hair is falling out.
My elbow's bent, my spine ain't straight,
My temperature is one-o-eight.
My brain is shrunk, I cannot hear,
There is a hole inside my ear.
I have a hangnail, and my heart is--what?
What's that? What's that you say?
You say today is. . .Saturday?
G'bye, I'm going out to play!"

Oh, kids. And, in equally exciting news, Younger Sister (and perhaps Roommate) and I are going to spend the night at our aunt and uncle's to greatly shorten the Monday morning commute. Woohoo! Off to find the travel case for my new (metaphorically) sparkly electric toothbrush. And, you know, pants.
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Sky fetish Pirates quote)
I love you.

one love.

let's get together and feel all right.
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Default)
Younger Sister and her boyfriend are watching Iron Man in the other room, while I am glorying in the fact that I finally finished the incredibly fiddly and border-line irritating project for my online class in advance on the deadline, so I can take some time before bed to organize myself and stuff. Mostly this means that I get to put in a load of laundry and by that I mean the awesome sweatshirt material comforter I had back when I lived in New York that I'd forgotten all about but when I was at my parents they had tons of the boxes from then and it was like second Christmas times a million, for serious. So that's nice.

Tomorrow is teaching at Forrest, 3rd grade, so at least the kids won't be a surprise. I'll get to work on my classroom management skills and cracking down on the troublemakers, 'cause you know, I'm such a badass. As you know.

But Younger Sister made a kickass asparagus frittata for dinner and it was delicious and she's letting me take some for lunch so I can be smug super proud of my lunch and make others jealous. And you wondered what went down in the teachers lounge. Crazy times, I tell you ;o)

I'm having an okay time of it, been better but been much worse, and it's really nice to be back in the north; though I'm leaving again on Friday because mom finished her degree and is getting her diploma! Or tassel, or something. Either way, I haven't been to Santa Barbara in... ages, so that'll be pretty.

It's been like 70 degrees out, the past two days. In January. Global warming sucks, but playing frisbee in a t-shirt and shorts in January? Doesn't, so much.

Hope all's well with you. I've sucked mightily at the whole keeping in touch with people thing lately, so if I haven't, call me! And the Christmas cards (oh how I laugh) are coming, I swear. Eventually. :D?
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Crowley sauntering)
Have survived the rest of this week, a holiday lunch with the crew at Forrest (which was lots of fun), gotten most of my Christmas presents bought, and now only need to pack the car and I can get this holiday started.

Easier said than done, that. Will be at my parents for the holiday of great hilarity (more info to follow). Here's hoping I have enough battery in my iPod to watch some movies on the way down... I wonder if my laptop will last long enough to play a DVD?

Stay warm, East Coasters (and West coasters, sheesh) and I'll see you all in... lots of hours?
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Flowers in your hair San Fran)
Mom's plane lands in a couple hours (she's here for a conference on making graphs, or something) and I'm still fighting off this weird almost cold that I've had for most of the week, but having now found another murderer thanks to Criminal Minds, I am off to clean and tidy the house. Oh, in more holiday news, I still have lots of Xmas cards if someone wants one. I plan on getting around to addressing/sending them soonish, promise. That post is here, or just shoot me an email.

It's feeling very San Francisco winter-y outside (I couldn't wear flip flops! Shock!) which is kind of lovely. I have oodles of ideas for holiday presents, and seeing as it looks like I'll be around long enough to have Amazon sent here, I should just bite the bullet and buy things.

Thanksgiving was lovely, though I've been sick (or almost-sick) ever since, which is a bummer. This too shall pass, naturally, but can it pass now, please?

Younger Sister said she'd be back "early" to help clean. Apparently her definition of early and mine are a little bit different, though to be fair I slept in (trying to sleep past the headache) also.

Hope everyone's having a good end to your weekend and that you're staying warm in all the different kinds of winter going around from coast to coast.
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Sometimes you make me laugh Due South)
Sitting at the table after breakfast while most of the rest of the family works their way through a crossword puzzle (they really like those). Good times so far, more people on the way today (because that's how we roll here) for another Thanksgiving-type dinner. So far it's been hilarious with some downtime of laziness, which is pretty nice. Weather's good, the dog has been behaving himself nicely (knock on wood) and it's shaping up as an excellent weekend. We might even watch The Music Man tonight! Which... I shouldn't find as exciting as I do.

But I'm thankful for my family (those that are here, those that are in other states on other coasts and those that are gone), my friends (who are actually in their Friday afternoons for the most part), the sporadic job that I have (though I wish it were less sporadic and more... job) and the fact that the sun is shining.

I'd say what I was fannishly grateful for, but I've been very delinquent in most of my watching. Ummmmm.... Fraser is thankful for Ray, and Ray (and how it sounds different when he says it is a mystery) and Dief (though he does make him pay and pay and pay); those at the BAU are thankful for kicking some murderer ass (and, y'know, being friends even if they don't talk about it much); Archie Goodwin is thankful for Nero Wolfe being such a insufferable genius (and, though neither admit it, vice versa); and no matter the state of canon, John is thankful for Rodney, Rodney for John, and all of them for the whole darn Team.
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Comala come one the dance is nearly done)
I just finished watching an episode of Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations (which I enjoy because Bourdain might he a hardass, but he's a well-meaning one who seems to genuinely appreciate people) where he was traveling between the US/Mexico border towns and meeting guys who are working in restaurants in the US and then their families (who the guys can't go visit because their citizenship papers mean they can't leave the US) and it made feel thankful that I get to see so much of my family in the next few days. Younger Sister and I are driving down to our grandparents until Sunday where we will be with: grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles and cousins and (for not-quite overlapping parts of the time) both of our boyfriends. Exciting!

So, if you haven't done so, take the time to tell your family and friends that they make you thankful, because that's the point of holidays... not the presents (and is it just me, or do all the Black Friday ads have a air of desperation to them? "BUY THINGS PLEASE? WE NEED YOUR MONEY!!!") or the food (although FOOD, omnomnom) or whatever, just that it's nice to spend time with people you care about. I believe that we're bringing the Wii to the party and oh LORD, the awesomeness that comes with my kiiiiinda competitive family playing Wii Tennis? Oh goodness.
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Hide your love away milo ventimiglia)
I sort of wanted to post something profound and thinky due to the date, but the truth is that it didn't touch my life in any way close to the way it affected others, so I'll just let it go, shall I? It's strange to think that most of the kids I teach (almost all of the kids I teach) don't have any independent memories of 9/11, though.

Frisbee was lovely, in that "running off stress" sort of way. I wish there'd been a little more sitting and hanging out time, but still, fun. I am off to NYC tomorrow night late to be in town for [livejournal.com profile] rhymester's Thingy, and will also get the chance to see [livejournal.com profile] capedcrusader92, [livejournal.com profile] alemara, [livejournal.com profile] kumquat_queen, MusicJunkie, Playwright!Twin, and EDD :o) Maybe even some grad school kids. [livejournal.com profile] alichacco, any way you'd be up for a quick coffee or something either Sat. or Sun. afternoon? I wish I could be there longer, but I'm luck to get to go as it is; we are in prime packing/moving mode, with a side of "Finish Dad's book and mail it out". I got to send a box to England today, though, which makes me feel very international. XD

Still, in all the stress, I bought a ticket to this (FYI, it will try to start cheerfully blasting "No Day But Today" kind of loudly, so mute your computer first), which makes everything a little bit better. :o)

I know I am not the first Mawr-kid to post about this, but in case you haven't seen it (especially if you're in NYC and might have seen something). She's a teacher in NYC. She went to my college and is in fact my "sister" class. Wishing good thoughts for her family and friends. No matter where you live, be safe, guys.

It's the last week of summer camp, and we're almost there! Tomorrow we have the pirate carnival (woo!) which will be kind of lamely fun, and then on Wednesday is the aquarium, Thursday the baseball game and overnight with my campers (woo?) and Friday we're done. I need to double-check that I can leave straight after camp closes because I need to get down to the Big Family Reunion ([livejournal.com profile] capedcrusader92, I miss you terribly and will miss you even more this weekend! Sadness.)

But tonight I think a couple counselors and junior counselors and I are going to see Mamma Mia, which will be all kinds of horrendous awesomeness. Colin Firth and Pierce Brosnan, SINGING. Word.

This weekend I got to see a matinee of The Dark Knight and it was... astoundingly well acted. Heath Ledger scared the life out of me. Although part of me kind of agrees with this review, despite all the bad press it's gotten the guy. A cool mess, a hot mess. But still quite messy. And am I the only one who thinks Bale's "Batman voice" is kind of strange?

Off to work up a skit for the last day of camp with my kids, who think I'm pretty entertaining. Have a good start to your week, everybody!
