flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Teachers do it)
Today I'm teaching middle school social studies which, at the moment, means that the 7th graders are writing poems about the Roman Empire, which are quite funny. Then we will have 6th we're studying India, and then something about timelines (w00t) and then finally Aztecs and Incas in 8th. And it's Friday, which means lots of hanging out and relaxing and weekend-ness.

I was also doing some work for online school (my new class, 3rd of 4 (almost there!), is called Understanding Language Acquisition and Cognition and involves lots of fiddly linguistics work) and so had to write about the importance of culture in understanding metaphors. If you don't have cars, telling someone the crowd was like a "traffic jam" isn't very powerful, huh?

Oh, and I plan on going to Ikea again this weekend. Where my to-do list is as follows:

One (1) of this.
Two (2) of these.
Probably something like this one.
And several (?) of these, depending on the size of my posters (might have to go to BB&B).

I stayed up too late doing laundry and organizing, but fortunately I've gotten enough extra sleep this week for it to be ok. Oh, and I should go get my backpack out of my car, so that my contact lens solution doesn't boil in the heat (not that it's exactly warm yet, but...) All in all, a good start to the weekend. Have fun, kids!

I know I am not the first Mawr-kid to post about this, but in case you haven't seen it (especially if you're in NYC and might have seen something). She's a teacher in NYC. She went to my college and is in fact my "sister" class. Wishing good thoughts for her family and friends. No matter where you live, be safe, guys.

Well done to all dads (especially mine, but I don't think he reads this, but anyway, thought that counts). Posting a daddy-ly poem.

The Writer

In her room at the prow of the house
Where light breaks, and the windows are tossed with linden,
My daughter is writing a story.

I pause in the stairwell, hearing
>From her shut door a commotion of typewriter-keys
Like a chain hauled over a gunwale.

Young as she is, the stuff
Of her life is a great cargo, and some of it heavy:
I wish her a lucky passage.

But now it is she who pauses,
As if to reject my thought and its easy figure.
A stillness greatens, in which

The whole house seems to be thinking,
And then she is at it again with a bunched clamor
Of strokes, and again is silent.

I remember the dazed starling
Which was trapped in that very room, two years ago;
How we stole in, lifted a sash

And retreated, not to affright it;
And how for a helpless hour, through the crack of the door,
We watched the sleek, wild, dark

And iridescent creature
Batter against the brilliance, drop like a glove
To the hard floor, or the desk-top,

And wait then, humped and bloody,
For the wits to try it again; and how our spirits
Rose when, suddenly sure,

It lifted off from a chair-back,
Beating a smooth course for the right window
And clearing the sill of the world.

It is always a matter, my darling,
Of life or death, as I had forgotten. I wish
What I wished you before, but harder.

Richard Wilbur

Ahahahahahaha, I wrote this yesterday but my computer ate it... until today. I love life.

I am officially graduated. Woah. Tomorrow is pick-up-diploma day, because obviously, that couldn't occur on the day of graduation or anything. Thanks, grad school. *shakes head*

There were robes! And parents and stuff! Pictures can be uploaded soon. Along with May Day. oops.

But I'm actually caught up on my emails, which is next-to awesome. Whee. And tomorrow is errandy and then attending a benefit showing of The Philadelphia Story. You know you want to come! Doors open at 6:30, and it's at Galapagos, a bar in Brooklyn. Directions here (it's right off the L!) and more info here under Wednesday. So come. We made cupcakes! XD

I am muy tired, and stuff, so I am off to bed in a comatose fashion. Also, to think good thoughts about my sore throat and stuffy nose. Hopefully allergies, because I hate colds.

Also, SPN is renewed for another season! Wahoooooooo. Of course, I am soooo ready for Thursday.

*

And now, welcome to today! I picked up my diploma and dropped off all my certification paperwork, so apparently they will issue my credential... in like three days. OMG. Of course, the backlog for CA is like three months, but whatever. *smirkysadface*

Thank you for the lovely graduation wishes, [livejournal.com profile] winkingstar, and heee for [livejournal.com profile] rhymester's phone call (I meant to call you back but... forgot, clearly. Though I have written your drabble, so I'll post it later).

Now for some caffeine and a slight coma before the benefit. Whee.

On another topic, if you enjoy writing fic based on crime caper movies, go see if one of the claims at [livejournal.com profile] doitillegally light you up. Makes me want to watch Lucky Number Slevin again. *makes note*
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Cloudy with soup showers)
Firstly, if you are in the mood to receive a drabble, go here because I want to do the icon-drabble meme, it'd be fun. Don't force me to chose and write about my own icons, people!

Secondly, on the off chance you know anyone who needs the "Math for Elementary School Teachers" textbook and/or a book to study for the LAST and the ATS-W, let me know. I don't want to haul them all the way to CA, so if you haven't taken the tests for NY certification, I'll give it to you. waaaaay cheap.

Seeing Mommy and Daddy tonight! Happy Mother's Day to all moms (and dads too, 'cause they're always awesome). I'm totally one of those dorks that actually enjoys hanging out with my parents. Weird :o)

Also, GIP *giggle*
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (New Steps JOY!)
I passed my CLEP test! I am no longer delinquent in Science!!!!! OMG this is so exciting. Was not expecting to pass; I squeaked by with a 58 (passing is 50). I am made of AWESOME!

Also, on the uptown 2, I saw... Adam Pascal. Yes, from RENT, and Aida, or whatever. It was extremely surreal. And hot *fans self* He fills jeans nicely, yes.

So, off to grad school to drop of COMPLETED forms *boogies* and pick up graduation tickets and masters regalia.

Woah, how am I getting a Masters. WTF.

(As you have no doubt noticed, this flailing will continue to be a common theme until approximately... Tuesday. Apologies in advance as well as retroactive.)

XD XD

flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Supernatural Dean Sam Mischief)
I'm in the middle of having panic attacks upon panics about the CLEP test I'm taking tomorrow (all the science I never learned, funfun) but had to take time out to watch SPN tonight. I totally brought my computer out to the tv so I could keep up a running commentary of the episode. *wibbles and bounces*

Spoilers like woah for All Hell Breaks Loose Pt 1 )

Off to continue memorizing like crazy (KingdomPhylumClassOrderFamilyGenusSpeices InterphaseProphaseMetaphaseAntaphaseTelophaseCytokinesis *checks* yay, right!)

OMG I'm graduating on Tuesday whatwhat.
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (OMG Sparkly)
Holy fuck. We just finished our month-long unit of study and are printing it out. It's like... 60 pages. 47 of them? Are minilessons.

We are so fucking awesome. Hurray us.

OMG I never want to format another text box again. Mrrrrr.

Ironically, this is the title of a SPN I really want to write. Have to get on that. XD
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Have lost all words)
Two things. Firstly, GIP. How funny is this? And also, because it's that time again... a Done is Good board, grad school style. And ow, my cheek hurts, so my sinuses and I are off to bed. [livejournal.com profile] winkingstar, thank you for the confetti! XD

flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (OMG Sparkly)
I passed my portfolio, it was so exciting! They totally called me on the fact that I used the same picture... three times. But hell, I passed!

And now I'm post an hour or two nap, I'm watching Harry Potter 1 and eating pasta. Yum.
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (OMGWTFBBQ Simon)
Holy crap. Turned in my Masters portfolio. Really hoping I don't have to revise it, but we'll know tomorrow. XD

holy crap, holy crap, holy crap

Off to take a shower. And, of course, DO MORE SCHOOLWORK. Maybe. I should. Yes.
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (PStory in which Mike has been levelered)
I have that momentary (I'm sure) feeling of peace and mild calm that always comes after you've cleaned your room. Granted, this calm is slightly shattered by the caffeine spike that comes with having finished a venti latte and needing to eat some dinner type thing, but still.

I am actually almost on top of things at the moment. I finished the Inquiry paper (of Doom and Annoyance, which really sums up many papers) and turned it in only... two weeks late? *disarming smile* Mostly it's because I totally took overadvantage of the fact that my extension didn't really have an end date.

AND! I finished my Phonics project and turned IT IN TOO. I am made of awesomeness. Or slight productivity. What remains in a portfolio due on Friday which I need to do some work on tonight (wheeee graphic picturey representations of my teaching philosophy, whut) and a Curriculum due on Tuesday which is coming together quite nicely, God bless my group members. They are so organized.... aha, that's where it's coming from. Run! The productivity is contagious! Ewwwwwwwww. XD

I also successfully taught mixed numbers (i.e. 2 and 1/3 or whatever) to my third graders with mostly comprehension, which is key. I also subbed this afternoon and prevailed in not flinging the noisy ones out the window. I feel this is a vast accomplishment.

Part of this feeling of accomplishment is due to the fact that one of the kids, right before we left, gave me a note (on a sticky note):

You rock. Thank you for putting up with us. - Kid's name

Have died of cute. Metaphorically, otherwise I will not graduate. Aheh.

Finally, deeeeeeear anxiety system (some people have nervous systems, I feel mine has progresed into an anxious system): no more anxiety attacks in the middle of third grade. Prickly stomach and pains in hip to stop now please. Partly because, wtf, pains in hip? Craziness. Also, irritiating. Loooooooove, Me
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Stu and Larry are my fake boyfriends)
Wow, hadn't seen The Stand in so long. I'd forgotten how entertaining it was. And how amazingly slashy if you're looking for it. I mean, Larry and Stu practically cuddle all the time. They show up in Vegas all holding hands, for goodness sake. It's all kinds of adorable.

So, in celebration, GIP. Because it cracks me up and melts me all at once.

In the midst of all this tv watching, I actually got lots of work done. Not enough, mind you. But I was productive. Shocking.
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Dancing with myself)
I should have gone to bed, but I've been doing a little work (and a lot of fanfic reading, bad me) and mostly I'm just happy that I'm not sick anymore. Not that I haven't been better from the flu for a while, but it's nice. Even though I'm drowning in schoolwork up to my eyes, life is pretty good. So remember that. And to help, here's track titles of the ginormous playlist I made on Wednesday night. Any tracks you want, let me know.

So, to sum up, smile. It won't mess up your hair. :o)

Long Mix of Endless Happy )

Oh, and I so need to be watching SG:A. John Sheppard is so pretty. *swoons*
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Teachers do it)
So I went to a professional development talk on social studies instruction, which was interesting but mildly repetitive. Now I'm sitting in the dining hall in the basement, working on my mess of schoolwork due soon. Miracle of miracles, I finished all the Curriculum work that I'd been "assigned" for today, so I won't feel like a total loser showing up to class. My plan for the next hour or two is to churn out some School Inquiry and maybe a little Portfolio work. I rock Powerpoint, can I just say. At least in the graphic organizer way. Sort of.

But I scribbled a whole page of notes for my paper during the conference today, so I'm feeling mildly confident. Wish me luck! And apologies for the ridiculousness that is my posts while I'm writing a paper.

Although yesterday's epiphany about Jensen Ackles as a caged bird still cracks me up

Ok wow, goodbye procrastination. Off to actually do something that can be crossed of a to-do list.
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (OMGWTFBBQ Simon)
Clearly I've gone crazy. Because I saw this and my first thought for icon keywords?

"i know why the caged bird sings"

OMGWTFANGELOU

*cackles*

flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (New Steps JOY!)
I've made three different, yet inter-related, to-do lists in the past six hours. I have a lot of writing/graphic organizer creating to do before my "working class" with my collaberative curriculum. But I've hit second wind, mostly because I just realized that I hadn't really eaten since some goldfish crackers at 5:30. Oops. Protein really makes you happier. Even if you at the beginning of your period. Crap.

But I've fleshed out a page rationale of my unit, a half-assesed organizer of the standards connection to our curriculum, part of the intro I'm in charge of.... and remembered to drop of my laundry! I rock. Despite watching most of Shattered Glass starring Hayden Christiansen procrastinating.

And! I made a 50+ playlist that I've called "Long Mix of Endless Happy" so that I don't run out of songs while I'm writing. It has most of the songs from Newsies. And "La Vie Boheme" from RENT, naturally.

I'll be the one other here, writing about care, curriculum, and the importance of supporting the child. Huzzah.
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Sekritly I am five)
If... I don't sleep until May 2nd, I might get all my work done. Am so glad that I didn't do any homework over break. And by glad, I mean ohshiti'mgonnadie.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Yup, it's finals time, grad school style.

Did I mention that I graduate (I almost want to put that in quotation marks, but that seems fatalistic) in a month and five days? Holy. Shit.

Of course, I have to finish: School Inquiry, Phonics project, Final Portfolio, Curriculum Project, a Unit of Study, and y'know, a couple tests to get certified before then.

Wahoo?

*off to make 8 MILLION to-do lists*

But, on the plus side? People loved my haircut. *is five*

To totally conclude: does anyone have the song "Walkin' on Sunshine"? Because I want to make a life-affirming mix on my iPod and I feel that that song is needed.
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Giving Tree)
So, per usual, I haven't done easily half the work I need to. Really, not even any of the work I need to. Oops? BUT, I did go up to Northern CA and visit family and have a job interview. It went well on all counts. Sorry to those in the area, I was honestly there for a night and a few hours and my (new?) allergies were acting up. Next time, promise.

I was hit while up north with the epiphany that I really like it up there. Which Younger Sister was enthused to hear, as her boyfriend works near San Francisco and now she's all full of ideas of apartment hunting. We'll see XD I still need to battle through the next month and a half of school.

That's it. Then I graduate with a fucking MASTERS IN EDUCATION. Wow, who made me this old? Or, apparently, this educated?

Also, could state credentialing websites be any more confusing? Probably yes, but trust me, they're confusing enough. Boo.

Oh, and I got a supercute haircut yesterday. It's short! Like between my shoulders and chin, which is so strangely new for me. I heart it a lot.

Not looking forward to the end of vacation, but it will be nice to see my 3rd graders. Hopefully, nothing imploded due to my day of hectic subbing before break. *crosses fingers*

Off to do a load of laundry and chip away at the homework. Back in New York by.... 6pm-ish? Probably? *freaks out, mildly*
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Law and Order SVU)
Got up at 5:45 this morning. Almost couldn't pay for my train ticket. Ran into one of the teachers from 199 on the AirTrain. Was not killed by sinus on the plane, though I now have a headache.

Consumed amazing turkey/cheddar/AVOCADO sandiwch upon arrival.

Have died of tired. But? In California, booooooooyah.

*falls over*

Also, last night my professor gave my class and I macaroni and cheese and WINE. Whaaaaat. But good.
