Biologist!Twin is coming to town for interviews this week. Her plane doesn't get in until late tonight, which gives me plenty of time to both tidy and vacuum up all the lovely sheddings of my cat, because he will make her sneeze.

I was kind of productive cleaning yesterday, then got distracted by both random papers, reading fanfic on A03... and the adorable snark of Ryan Reynolds on Blade: Trinity. Gosh, that movie is terrible. Though even a glimpse of Callum Keith Rennie makes me smile.

I hope to also celebrate her arrival by making cookies. We'll see if that plan makes it to fruition :o)

I got the most amusing (ish) email from the payroll department at Forrest today:

paycheck sent me a note and said that you have a payroll check uncashed

10-15-09 check#XXXXXXXX

Do you know where the check is ? Should I stop pay and re-issue?

So apparently I have a paycheck sitting somewhere in the chaos of my room. At least it will make cleaning exciting, a sort of "find the baby in the King Cake" version of tidying.

But then I have grand plans, in that I want have the ingredients to make Pioneer Woman's chicken picatta, though I think I will either make rice or penne instead of angel hair. And then maybe Alton Brown's chocolate chip cookies, because they are delicious. Oooh, or perhaps make some and freeze the others, for great Hot Cookie at a Moment's Notice!

(not quite sure where all those caps came from, but it amuses me)

The hilarious awesomeness that is [livejournal.com profile] isurrendered still continues. I have a sketched out plan of the first season of The Diogenes Boys in my notebook; next chance I get I will take a stab and actually writing them down. The fact that I have actually let Simon Baker be by turns adorable and a bastard and yet always Australian never fails to make me grin. (Also making me grin is a tribute to him by Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban about being Australian. Very goofy yet cute.)

Ok, let the great cleaning commence! Probably with a side helping of Disney movie, because those never get old :o)

Although the mention of Disney reminds me of this article, which you should read: Boys Aren't Stupid But Renaming Rapunzel Is from NPR. Sheesh.

Today I:

+ did two loads of laundry (one of them was my sheets, bonus)

+ bought supplies to clean the bathroom

+ bought groceries

- didn't actually make of them for dinner (it was a PB&J sandwich kind of night)

+ continued to eat my way through the loaf of Alton Brown banana bread that I made last night. YUM.

+ had an epiphany about how to add furniture to my bedroom so that I could actually store all my stuff.

+ got to rewatch Lucky Number Slevin, which is one of my favorite crime thriller type movies.

So I spent tonight (in the midst of watching the kind of entertaining trio of CSI episodes that they knitted into a crossover) poking at a few stories that I'd posted before, so I bring you the multi-fandom drabbles that was Exothermic Reactions New! and Improved! Which mostly means that I edited some things and make the words better and make more sense. Each little bit has their own title, which made putting them in my compiled list of fic here.

I finally unlocked my contribution to [livejournal.com profile] mcshep_match Team Peace, Imagine Whirled Peas, where John and Rodney get to babysit Torren for Teyla and much cuteness and snuggly napping occur.

Hopefully you haven't read these, because I'd love to hear what people think!

This morning Younger Sister and Roommate and their old college roommate drove down to southern California to visit some friends and stuff, so I have the house to myself until Monday night (when Roommate gets back). I did a little tidying (mostly running the dishwasher, because much wine was drunk and they all made rice krispy treats, both of which make dishes) and then had delicious tortellini with my sister's homemade pasta sauce of awesome. Then I made Jello instant pudding (I know my gourmet skills impress you so) so that was tasty.

I then watched a few season 1 Bones episodes and spoilers for 'Man in the Fallout Shelter' and 'Woman in the Car' ).

It was so super hot for a couple days, and I had this impulse to write about how heatwaves can drive a variety of people crazy. I wanted especially to write a drabble in Bones and Criminal Minds and, amazingly, it happened! I am shocked when sometimes I had an urge to write a specific thing and sit down... and do it. I mean, I sat down and wrote it out long hand and then typed it and edited and then there it was. Honestly, sometimes the story just sort of pours out (which sounds kind of crazy and hippy, that the story "fell from my fingers" or something like that) and happens and it's super cool and exciting. So, long story short, go read Exothermic Reactions and see how elementary!verse John and Rodney, Rusty and Danny, Booth and Brennan, Prentiss and Reid and Morgan, and Fraser and Kowalski all deal with the ick of summery heat. It definitely cheered me up, so hope you enjoy it!

So, in one of those "I started out on someone's journal and eight clicks away ended up here" kind of moments, I found an amazing and awesome and long AU of the first season of Supernatural and have to tell you all about it.

Metaphysical by [livejournal.com profile] cjmarlowe (AU, gen, R for violence/language, ~80,000 words) - Three years after he turned in his horse and scattergun for frock coats and textbooks, Sam Winchester is tracked down to upstart Stanford University by his estranged brother Dean, who arrives with the news that their father has gone missing. His disappearance turns out to be only the first of a series of events that takes them all the way across an alternate America circa 1905, from the death of Sam's girlfriend to a haunting in Nebraska, from demonic omens to spiritualists to hijacked airships, and inevitably a long-delayed trip home.

John Winchester isn't anxious to be found, but his sons are convinced that the family is stronger together than apart and don't let anything stand in the way of their pursuit. Especially once they realize that pursuing their father means staying on the trail of the demon who killed their mother. A demon who isn't finished with the Winchesters just yet.

Gotta love the idea of a steampunk re-imagining of the first season (with art!), so go read it. And don't worry, it doesn't follow exactly to canon, so there will be enough surprises to keep your interest.

I made many to-do lists today and actually did a rough completion of all of them, which mostly means that I had lots of cleaning tasks that I did a haphazard job on. Except for the bathroom; that might be tomorrow's mission. But I can see my floor and the living room looks less like a bomb hit it (scattering pillows left and right) and the clean dishes are now in the cupboard like they belong (as opposed to sitting forlornly in the dishwasher, yearning for independent mobility) and I updated my links to Remix VII fic... not that that was a vital part of the list, but hey, progress.

In totally random news, want to name Laurie R. King's next Holmes/Russel mystery? You can! XD

Does anyone have a copy of the Original Broadway recording of Guys and Dolls (ie the one with Nathan Lane singing Nathan Detroit) that they could not so subtly send my way? The CD I have, through many years of wear and tear, has become uplayable past the middle, which is really distressing. So I thought I'd ask before I go shelling out more money.

I would be totally amendable to a cd "sent" (electronically) in return, or a mix playlist of your choosing :o)

It's nice to have some days when I know that I can't be called to teach... because schooooooooool's out for SUMMER! *air guitar*
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Oh noes i hate it when that happens)
I have slacked off on posting poems (oops) so today I bring you the adorable awesomeness of Shel Silverstein. I still know parts of "the Homework Machine" by memory, I must have had to memorize it at some point in grade school.

*

Picture Puzzle Piece (Shel Silverstein)

One picture puzzle piece
Lyin' on the sidewalk,
One picture puzzle piece
Soakin' in the rain.
It might be a button of blue
On the coat of the woman
Who lived in a shoe.
It might be a magical bean,
Or a fold in the red
Velvet robe of a queen.
It might be the one little bite
Of the apple her stepmother
Gave to Snow White.
It might be the veil of a bride
Or a bottle with some evil genie inside.
It might be a small tuft of hair
On the big bouncy belly
Of Bobo the Bear.
It might be a bit of the cloak
Of the Witch of the West
As she melted to smoke.
It might be a shadowy trace
Of a tear that runs down an angel's face.
Nothing has more possibilities
Than one old wet picture puzzle piece.

I have been highly lazy today (as evidenced by the several hour long nap that I took on my bed with my cat this afternoon) and STILL haven't figured out what to eat for dinner, oops? Perhaps that makes it potstickers night :o) Though first that means we have to wash the dishes in the sink... dang it. Hope everyone is having a good middle of their weekend!
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Default)
So I'm pondering a new Elementary!verse bit in my head and so I ask the assembled...

what was the weirdest school-time/school-age injury you suffered as a kid? I'm thinking of the "falling off the monkey bars and breaking your arm"/"nosebleed during the school play" variety. Nothing too scary, though; this is adorableness that I am writing, not horror, thanks :o)

I am home with Mom this weekend hanging out and being helpful and at present, I feel that the "productivity" will manifest itself as me cleaning out my room, because there's all this junk that I've had forever that I probably don't need to still have. Fun. Orrrrr, perhaps a nap XD

But the weather is lovely and I love being home and how I can see lights from my window down the hill at night and it's great.

Apologies for the slight non-sequitor-ness; I didn't get much sleep :o)
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Comala come one the dance is nearly done)
Or, in other words, if anyone has the soundtrack to Mamma Mia. I would love to... procure it. Because I re-watched the movie over the weekend and, as silly as James Bond Remington Steele Pierce Brosnan* singing is... the songs have been stuck in my head. So pretty please?

Goals for the day include churning out my last (LAST!) project for online credentialing to teach English Language learners in California. Barring paperwork and more money, because that's the way the state rolls. Still, good thing to have. Not that there are spare teaching jobs, of course, because CA is pink slipping people like crazy, but a girl can dream :o)

Secondary goals include cleaning my room like woah. I mean, seriously.

*It makes me sad that Colin Firth, who can sing, gets way less voice-time. Not that he's not perfect for his role, but still.

Mom's plane lands in a couple hours (she's here for a conference on making graphs, or something) and I'm still fighting off this weird almost cold that I've had for most of the week, but having now found another murderer thanks to Criminal Minds, I am off to clean and tidy the house. Oh, in more holiday news, I still have lots of Xmas cards if someone wants one. I plan on getting around to addressing/sending them soonish, promise. That post is here, or just shoot me an email.

It's feeling very San Francisco winter-y outside (I couldn't wear flip flops! Shock!) which is kind of lovely. I have oodles of ideas for holiday presents, and seeing as it looks like I'll be around long enough to have Amazon sent here, I should just bite the bullet and buy things.

Thanksgiving was lovely, though I've been sick (or almost-sick) ever since, which is a bummer. This too shall pass, naturally, but can it pass now, please?

Younger Sister said she'd be back "early" to help clean. Apparently her definition of early and mine are a little bit different, though to be fair I slept in (trying to sleep past the headache) also.

Hope everyone's having a good end to your weekend and that you're staying warm in all the different kinds of winter going around from coast to coast.
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Remember remember Torchwood)
While I could blather on about the irritation that someone has gotten a credit card with my name on it and charged money at Sears (fixable, but distressing), I would like to stick with happy facts. Such as the following:

* I got to sleep in today.

* I could conceivably and thematically watch V for Vendetta tonight.

* I will have clean clothes shortly (woo laundry).

* Four blocks away, the street sign still says "Obama Street". \o/

Off to dump clothes in the washing machine and think happy thoughts. And maybe dig up my "Bartlet for America" icon, because sometimes fictions become reality. Yes, we can, and YES WE FUCKIN' DID XD
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Teachers do it)
Today I'm teaching middle school social studies which, at the moment, means that the 7th graders are writing poems about the Roman Empire, which are quite funny. Then we will have 6th we're studying India, and then something about timelines (w00t) and then finally Aztecs and Incas in 8th. And it's Friday, which means lots of hanging out and relaxing and weekend-ness.

I was also doing some work for online school (my new class, 3rd of 4 (almost there!), is called Understanding Language Acquisition and Cognition and involves lots of fiddly linguistics work) and so had to write about the importance of culture in understanding metaphors. If you don't have cars, telling someone the crowd was like a "traffic jam" isn't very powerful, huh?

Oh, and I plan on going to Ikea again this weekend. Where my to-do list is as follows:

One (1) of this.
Two (2) of these.
Probably something like this one.
And several (?) of these, depending on the size of my posters (might have to go to BB&B).

I stayed up too late doing laundry and organizing, but fortunately I've gotten enough extra sleep this week for it to be ok. Oh, and I should go get my backpack out of my car, so that my contact lens solution doesn't boil in the heat (not that it's exactly warm yet, but...) All in all, a good start to the weekend. Have fun, kids!
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (I have not found the science mcshep)
I have achieved desk! Which is exceedingly impressive if you had seen how many screws the damn thing has. Sheesh.

And I get to teach in the morning. Yikes. *flees into bed*

V: VoilĂ ! In view, a humble vaudevillian veteran, cast vicariously as both victim and villain by the vicissitudes of Fate. This visage, no mere veneer of vanity, is a vestige of the vox populi, now vacant, vanished. However, this valorous visitation of a by-gone vexation, stands vivified and has vowed to vanquish these venal and virulent vermin van-guarding vice and vouchsafing the violently vicious and voracious violation of volition. The only verdict is vengeance; a vendetta, held as a votive, not in vain, for the value and veracity of such shall one day vindicate the vigilant and the virtuous. Verily, this vichyssoise of verbiage veers most verbose, so let me simply add that it's my very good honor to meet you and you may call me V.

Evey: Are you like a crazy person?

Gosh, I love this movie. What I don't love? That I somehow have to rehang my sister's closet door... by myself. As well as getting the GIGANTIC (though awesome) tv into the car. I also have to make a "language acquisition chart" for my online class. Ew, boring and ew.

But teaching at Labyrinth today was adorable (though wow, weird when all the kids are a year older and there are lots of new teachers) and I got to have coffee with one of my friends there. Getting up at 6:15 was a bummer, though. Not the shortest commute ever.
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Supernatural Dean Sam Mischief)
From [livejournal.com profile] sadcypress:

When you see this, post another Supernatural quote in your LJ. Let's see how long this can go on.

Dean: Hey, Sam?
Sam: Yeah?
Dean: Now that this is all over, I want you to tell me what that secret was.
Sam: Look, you're my brother. And I'd die for you. But there are some things I need to keep to myself.

- Episode 1.5, "Bloody Mary"

Gosh, I love me some SPN season one. I am horrendously (like at least a month of episodes!) behind in the current season, and I might not see the new one for a while due to moving and lack of cable. Perhaps I will buy season 3 as a "woo, you moved!" present to myself.

The Craigslist mover guys came (2 hours late) but were ridiculously fast and adorable. So now all of our crap (except for my computer and the tv, mostly) is in San Francisco. We are back at the "old house" for a couple hours while I use the internet (not getting hooked up until Sunday, ew!) to go online for class and then back to the new place for the night. Whee, it is so cute! I will have to take pictures.
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Hide your love away milo ventimiglia)
I sort of wanted to post something profound and thinky due to the date, but the truth is that it didn't touch my life in any way close to the way it affected others, so I'll just let it go, shall I? It's strange to think that most of the kids I teach (almost all of the kids I teach) don't have any independent memories of 9/11, though.

Frisbee was lovely, in that "running off stress" sort of way. I wish there'd been a little more sitting and hanging out time, but still, fun. I am off to NYC tomorrow night late to be in town for [livejournal.com profile] rhymester's Thingy, and will also get the chance to see [livejournal.com profile] capedcrusader92, [livejournal.com profile] alemara, [livejournal.com profile] kumquat_queen, MusicJunkie, Playwright!Twin, and EDD :o) Maybe even some grad school kids. [livejournal.com profile] alichacco, any way you'd be up for a quick coffee or something either Sat. or Sun. afternoon? I wish I could be there longer, but I'm luck to get to go as it is; we are in prime packing/moving mode, with a side of "Finish Dad's book and mail it out". I got to send a box to England today, though, which makes me feel very international. XD

Still, in all the stress, I bought a ticket to this (FYI, it will try to start cheerfully blasting "No Day But Today" kind of loudly, so mute your computer first), which makes everything a little bit better. :o)

I never remember to do this meme when it comes around, but it's today's "Daily Entertainment" when I was wandereing by [livejournal.com profile] milliways_bar, so here goes:

1. My username is ______ because ______.
2. My journal is titled ____ because ______.
3. My friends page is called ____ because ______.
4. My default userpic is ____ because ______.

If anyone else wants to do this, feel free! I always enjoy learning about why people chose their usernames, it's fascinating.

Packing continues apace, though mostly it's just making my room look like crap. But I got to sleep a lot last night, so that was helpful, if time consuming. But at least I've watched several episodes of Bones, including the Christmas episode where they're all quarantined in the Jeffersonian. I can tell I'm tired and emotional right now; the bit where they all got their families to visit them made me cry. *sniffle*

Okay, productivity time now!

Oh, and, while messy (and a little coffee groundy) the cold-brew coffee is still delicious!
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Have lost all words must dance)
Finished my paper. *dances* Took a whole bunch of crap over to the new apartment. *boogies* Even managed to have dinner after I got home at 10pm. *shimmies* I get to go play frisbee at the beach tomorrow! *jazz hands!*

And I finally get to see my cat after a week of him being with my sister. I missed him. *SNUUUUUUUGGLE*
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (New Steps JOY!)
Of course, right after I post about this... the guy emailed us and said we can have the apartment. I... think we're taking it?

So a tentative (and yet still enthusiastic) \o/ ?
