flyakate: Calvin and Hobbes in snow (Yuletide)
Seeing as I "helpfully" (er, I mean that ironically) linked either to my main journal or my page of fanfic (though I suppose that would be helpful so you could see what I write, and therefore what I might enjoy? Don't ask me to explain my logic, there was none) I will write this and leave it at the top of my journal and make a link from my fanfic page as well. My apologies. So, to begin...

Dear Yuletide Writer,

Christmas morning was late in the Flyakate family household, which worked out just fine. We also took the time to watch everyone else open up a present so that it stretched out the actual present-opening time quite nicely. I am greatly excited because not only did I get a lovely new messenger bag (that I had picked out from Macy's known about) and Bones season 2, but a hilarious spatula shaped like a gingerbread man, a "Cookie Field Guild" and "Muffin Bible" from Older Sister, one of those awesome plunger measuring cups (though not this one) and a pastry board from Younger Sister, an "Interactive Sherlock Holmes mystery" from Older Brother and...

A KITCHEN AID MIXER!!! See how pretty?

I already have made cookies using it (or rather, using Mom's, so mine can stay in its box for the trek back North when I go) and made delicious gingerbread cookies ALL BY MYSELF (though Younger Sister was instrumental in optimizing the cookie cutter spacing and insuring that I had a system for chilling the dough the longest (she likes to organize things, what can I say?)

And Pete the cat got catnip and was hilarious.

But I also got [livejournal.com profile] yuletide stories! Not one. Not even two. THREE WHOLE STORIES, which I will tell you about:

* Comfort (Lie to Me, Gillian/Cal, PG-13) is a lovely look at the true affection that the two of them have for each other and how they lean on each other after a hard case.

* Unwind (Lie to Me, Loker/Torres, PG-13) is a companion story (eee!) where Loker and Torres have a very in-character discussion about why they do what they do with some UST (which might become resolved, hard to say). Very cute and I loved it too!

Also (because the world and Yuletide writers love me):

* can't steal happiness (Mary Russell - LR King, Holmes and Rusell, G) which explains how Mary learns how to pick pockets and hold her own in a discussion with Holmes. The author seemed worried that it didn't fit the timeline, but I have no problem believing that Holmes would let Russell help on a case, even early in their relationship. Lovely and sounds like a lost bit of the novels.

Also, my recipient liked their story! Woo!

So, anyone want a muffin recipe? Or short drabble of your choice in the fandoms I know? (Relatedly, apparently [livejournal.com profile] sga_santa is having drabble madness until January 1st, open to all! Perhaps Elementary!verse boys will have to make an appearance...) I am open to suggestions!

:o) Happy holidays!

Still up with the siblings (Younger Sister is playing her way through some Wii Fit games, good times), but here to say Merry Christmas and happiest of holidays!

There's magic in the air this evening
Magic in the air
The world is at her best, you know
When people love and care
The promise of excitement is one the night will keep
After all there's only one more sleep till Christmas

The world has gotta smile today
The world has gotta glow
There's no such thing as strangers
When a stranger says "Hello"
And everyone is family, we're havin' so much fun
After all there's only one more sleep
till Christmas

'Tis the season to be jolly and joyous
With a burst of pleasure we feel it all right
It's a season when the Saints can employ us
To spread the news about peace and to keep love alive

There's somethin' in the wind today that's good for everyone
Yes, faith is our hearts today, we're shinin' like the sun
And everyone can feel it, the feeling's runnin' deep
After all there's only one more sleep till Christmas
After all there's only one more sleep till Christmas day.

Watching POTC 2 with siblings (one of Younger Sister's presents and enjoying the lull after eating a still mostly squishy gingerbread cookie. Yum.

Happy Christmas Eve birthday to [livejournal.com profile] capedcrusader92, whee! I made a post last night, but my computer ate it. Boo.

Today was nice, on the whole. It was nice and relaxed (we not really ever being wake up at dawn type people) and full of coffee cake and presents.

Those being:

* t-shirts, two fuzzy sweaters and a grey hoodie
* some GameCube games
* finger puppets!!! for teaching! They're so cute and little. A pig with a crown and a tutu! *glees*
* a really swank digital camera (which I specifically wanted) 'cause mine was lame and old and didn't work
* a pair of jeans that don't quite fit

Fun fun :o) And it will be nice to have Christmas Part II in a couple days with Mom's sisters and my cousins, etc. I'm looking forward to it. Not mostly because I heart central CA.

Today? It was 80 degrees. On Christmas Day. I.... could get used to this XD

Borrowed courtesey of [livejournal.com profile] chaos_pockets, here is the 1979 animated Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe from my childhood. I'm sure it was from many of your childhoods too.

So go and watch the creepy scary witch that in my childhood mind, totally eclipses the eeriness of Tilda Swenson.

Also, does anyone else remember The Christmas Toy? OMG why isn't that on DVD? The song always made me cry... And why did they put the whole movie up? *pouts*

In other news, I finished one of my [livejournal.com profile] yuletide pinch hits. Now to slide some more smutty hottness onto the end of my last one before I get sucked up in the holiday cheer that is my Older Brother arriving in three hours. At least we found and decorated a tree. And we're making gingerbread houses! How Martha Stewart of us. Or maybe just the Food Network. Although this kind of house might be out of our range XD

How's with you all?

And [livejournal.com profile] poinsoninjest and [livejournal.com profile] kumquat_queen: I got your cards, they are beautiful thank you!!!
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Default)
Wow, if you haven't seen it and need a laugh (or to roll your eyes) go watch the trailer for Ocean's 13. I'd be irritated about the penchant for continuing to make sequels about this, if they were all so aware of how amusing and corny it is. And Al Pacino, George Clooney, Brad Pitt AND Andy Garcia? Hell YES. *giggles*

Incentive to work on my [livejournal.com profile] yuletide pinch hit, that's for sure. *waggles eyebrows* I dutifully made a list of all the fic ideas that had been rattling in my head and have finished/worked substantially on... none of them. Oops?

But Older Sister is here! Now all we need is Older Brother (2nd Older Sister-with-Husband can't get off work) and it will officially be Christmas! And, you know, a tree. Somewhere.

Well, I emerged from the end of the semester relatively unscathed (a predeliction to taking spontaneous naps in the past two days, but that's to be expected). I successfully turned in a portfolio on Thursday detailing my growth over the semester (whee?) and the presentation was way less high stress than our professors set it up to be. Shocker, they were just trying to make us more anxious *shakes head*

I can't believe I finally get out of here and fly to California tomorrow. *would be giddy, but tired woah* My goal today is to clean my room majorly, go buy an NYU tshirt (Xmas present) and finish my Christmas cards. Partly because I know that I need to figure out the large amount of papers in here before I leave, so that I am not swallowed alive by them when I return. Also, I need to find all my textbooks, because some of them are ones I'm using next semester too and therefore should read over break.

The other thing, is the fun Xmas Wish list meme. I did a verison of this, but to follow the "rules", here it is really. Link to yours, please and thank you :o)

MY WISH LIST, by Flyakate:

1. Kid picture books. Used or not, as long as they are not falling apart. Soon-to-be-teachers are poor, yo. Especially wanted if these are books you liked as a kid and not Where the Wild Things Are. XD

2. Recommendations of nice comfy not-sneakery grownup shoes, because I suck at finding shoes that don't give me blisters on my heels. *pouts*

3. Colorful, comfy, fun socks. Whee, socks.

4. Bouncy exercising music (or something fun/upbeat to listen to), because I need to exercise the student teaching eating-too-much-crap-ness off yesterday.

5. Music by Ladysmith Black Mombazo will win you everything, for life. *nods*

6. Newsies? I mean, come ON, singing Christian Bale!

7. Cards/pictures/small artsy things to hang on the wall. Funky as you like, quotes are fabulous. Collages/original art is also amazing.

8. Fanfic, if that's your thing, totally rocks. Ummm, Firefly, Supernatural, Due South, especially, but also Dark is Rising, Dark Tower, and RENT, too.

9. Recipes of tasty, not ridiculously bad for you things. That are not hard to cook. Wow, coherent.

10. An elementary teaching job in California. Preferences near San Francisco, but near LA-ish is okay too. Hey, it could happen...

If you would be needing my address, email me at KatStarling9@yahoo.com. Yis.

Reason I haven't updated in a while is because of the end-of-semester work that is eating me alive. Which seems even more ridiculous because my days are filled with student teaching and I keep getting so tired at night. Well, a 10-15 page paper calls, so wish me luck. Hopefully most of it can be cribbed cut and pasted gathered from the GOING ON 26 pages of data analysis wtf. Wish me luck? Or broken limbs? Or something?

Also, if you missed the absurdly early Holiday Card post, it's over here. Screened, of course :o)

A week and four days from now? I'll be in California. Here's hoping...
