flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Danny and Don are BFF)
Watching So You Think You Can Dance, which is lots of fun. I've slowly found myself being sucked into watching CSI: New York, which has a lot less goofiness than Miami (sorry, the over dramatics of Horatio Caine have gotten old and their plot lines are so strange) and the same good cast (if not better) than Las Vegas. I've already talked about how adorable Eddie Cahill (Detective Don Flack) is and how much I enjoy Gary Sinise.

After watching last week's episode though, I find myself hit with a plot bunny of Gary Sinise and the cool ME being BFF and roommates because of spoiler for It Happened to Me )

I'm very excited because this week they are having a CSI TRIFECTA! of episodes, so that characters from all three are solving a crime together. Which means that Danny and Martin from Without a Trace (which had a crossover with CSI: Las Vegas that was a little bit pointless and too focused on Jack, sheesh) can totally hang out with Don and Mac and Danny (Messer) and have great New York hijinks. Yes please!

Also, I was rereading/re-editing some of my stories and I really want to muck around in the Elementary!verse sandbox again. Or fix the story bits that I wrote about it being too darn hot in many fandoms, because they're not quite perfect yet.

And! I need to sign up for Yuletide (and actually do it!), which is an obscure fandom fanfic exchange. Last year I defaulted (boo, long story) but I've done it for two years before that (as a pinch-hitter the first, and a writer AND pinch-hitter the second) and it's tons of fun to see what you can write--Bradbury fanfic!--or what you can get.

To conclude, apparently my brain has gone right past Thanksgiving and towards Christmas. Anyone have a present that they're dying for?
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Crowley sauntering)
Have survived the rest of this week, a holiday lunch with the crew at Forrest (which was lots of fun), gotten most of my Christmas presents bought, and now only need to pack the car and I can get this holiday started.

Easier said than done, that. Will be at my parents for the holiday of great hilarity (more info to follow). Here's hoping I have enough battery in my iPod to watch some movies on the way down... I wonder if my laptop will last long enough to play a DVD?

Stay warm, East Coasters (and West coasters, sheesh) and I'll see you all in... lots of hours?
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Flowers in your hair San Fran)
Mom's plane lands in a couple hours (she's here for a conference on making graphs, or something) and I'm still fighting off this weird almost cold that I've had for most of the week, but having now found another murderer thanks to Criminal Minds, I am off to clean and tidy the house. Oh, in more holiday news, I still have lots of Xmas cards if someone wants one. I plan on getting around to addressing/sending them soonish, promise. That post is here, or just shoot me an email.

It's feeling very San Francisco winter-y outside (I couldn't wear flip flops! Shock!) which is kind of lovely. I have oodles of ideas for holiday presents, and seeing as it looks like I'll be around long enough to have Amazon sent here, I should just bite the bullet and buy things.

Thanksgiving was lovely, though I've been sick (or almost-sick) ever since, which is a bummer. This too shall pass, naturally, but can it pass now, please?

Younger Sister said she'd be back "early" to help clean. Apparently her definition of early and mine are a little bit different, though to be fair I slept in (trying to sleep past the headache) also.

Hope everyone's having a good end to your weekend and that you're staying warm in all the different kinds of winter going around from coast to coast.
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Sometimes you make me laugh Due South)
Sitting at the table after breakfast while most of the rest of the family works their way through a crossword puzzle (they really like those). Good times so far, more people on the way today (because that's how we roll here) for another Thanksgiving-type dinner. So far it's been hilarious with some downtime of laziness, which is pretty nice. Weather's good, the dog has been behaving himself nicely (knock on wood) and it's shaping up as an excellent weekend. We might even watch The Music Man tonight! Which... I shouldn't find as exciting as I do.

But I'm thankful for my family (those that are here, those that are in other states on other coasts and those that are gone), my friends (who are actually in their Friday afternoons for the most part), the sporadic job that I have (though I wish it were less sporadic and more... job) and the fact that the sun is shining.

I'd say what I was fannishly grateful for, but I've been very delinquent in most of my watching. Ummmmm.... Fraser is thankful for Ray, and Ray (and how it sounds different when he says it is a mystery) and Dief (though he does make him pay and pay and pay); those at the BAU are thankful for kicking some murderer ass (and, y'know, being friends even if they don't talk about it much); Archie Goodwin is thankful for Nero Wolfe being such a insufferable genius (and, though neither admit it, vice versa); and no matter the state of canon, John is thankful for Rodney, Rodney for John, and all of them for the whole darn Team.
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Comala come one the dance is nearly done)
I just finished watching an episode of Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations (which I enjoy because Bourdain might he a hardass, but he's a well-meaning one who seems to genuinely appreciate people) where he was traveling between the US/Mexico border towns and meeting guys who are working in restaurants in the US and then their families (who the guys can't go visit because their citizenship papers mean they can't leave the US) and it made feel thankful that I get to see so much of my family in the next few days. Younger Sister and I are driving down to our grandparents until Sunday where we will be with: grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles and cousins and (for not-quite overlapping parts of the time) both of our boyfriends. Exciting!

So, if you haven't done so, take the time to tell your family and friends that they make you thankful, because that's the point of holidays... not the presents (and is it just me, or do all the Black Friday ads have a air of desperation to them? "BUY THINGS PLEASE? WE NEED YOUR MONEY!!!") or the food (although FOOD, omnomnom) or whatever, just that it's nice to spend time with people you care about. I believe that we're bringing the Wii to the party and oh LORD, the awesomeness that comes with my kiiiiinda competitive family playing Wii Tennis? Oh goodness.
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Default)
which is ungrammatical, but the best you'll get from me at this date and time. XD

Christmas was lovely, New Years low key and mostly amusing. Nice (though tiring) time with various bits of family, and tomorrow we're back off to southern CA for another almost week in which I turn older and hopefully soak up some sun, fingers crossed and weather willing.

Small thoughts, varied and sundry:

If you haven't seen Ocean's 13, be heartened, for it is more like 11 and gleefully distanced from 12. Danny and Rusty are... so Danny and Rusty, it makes my heart glad (and full of fic bunnies, but that's not really new).

Upon rewatching the third Pirates, I remember why I enjoyed it, and why I am so happy that [livejournal.com profile] fahye "fixed" it with turn your sail (never say we die).

[livejournal.com profile] yuletide has come and gone (again) leaving multiple fascinating fics; I am forever amazed at how spot-on the characterizations and voices in each fic is. Glad to know that there is an audience who glories in Who Framed Roger Rabbit fic as much as I do. Also, if you are the only person who hasn't read this, go read The Merry-Go-Round Broke Down because it is the brilliant ficcish child of the movie.

Because the author reveal is official, I can point you to my two fics. I wrote a Something Wicked This Way Comes story that walked a much darker path than I meant: Beat, Pause, and Beat. Also, I pinch hit an amusing Eureka romp, Early Bird Special, which makes me want to write and read more Eureka fic. I will be posting them on this journal as well and linking them to my Big List of Fic (called Flya.fic in my sidebar, I'm so clever) so apologies for the spam.

It's almost time for the world to start back up again (I don't have to "be" anywhere until I sub on the 9th) which is too soon. But what do you do.

I hope that all of you had and are having a lovely holiday, and especially doubly and triply so for [livejournal.com profile] capedcrusader92 and [livejournal.com profile] indy_go, who had birthdays. Huzzah, Capricorns!
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Circle complete by another's happiness S)
Merry Christmas, everyone! Unless of course, that's not your hoiday, and then happy Tuesday! XD

It was nice to spend the past two-ish days with family, and we all seemed pleased with presents this morning. I got a lot of clothes (because Flyakate style isn't exactly grownup yet) and a new purse from my Oldest Sister, which is gorgeous and a happy yellow color. Another excellent present I got was the set of the Chronicles of Narnia on audio cd, which are gorgeously read by Kenneth Brannath, Patrick Stewart, and other people. Woohoo!

We will have "second Christmas" this weekend with the extended family of cousins and aunts and uncles, and then (because of course I won't have received enough presents by then) my birthday is the 6th.

To make the day even happier, [livejournal.com profile] yuletide opened this morning, and I a coolly creepy and neat IT story of my very own called Unfinished about the things you remember even when you're not supposed to (one of the coolest conceits from that book). Neither of my authors have responded back to mine, but comments are appreciate, which is joyous. So go read rare fandom fic! It's awesome!

Love and miss you all! Those of you I owe cards to, they will be along *shamefaced grin*
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Teachers do it)
BBC America has decided to play both Dress to Kill and Glorious, which is awesome background noise as I do various householdy things tonight. I spent last week working in fifth grade, who are great and awesome and way more fun (and less snarky) than I was fearing, so that was awesome. The downside of actual work is that I am frequently so exhausted that I forget to post, and then spend most of my weekend sleeping. Mmm, sleep.

Younger Sister took the dog and the cat down to our parents house, because she doesn't have to be up here (one of the perks of working from home for our dad) and so I have the house all to myself until I drive down to SoCal on Friday. Hopefully it will be nice, because I can have some me time and do silly things like sing while I wash the dishes and watch crappy tv that my sister would mock.

I can't believe it's so close to the holidays (and why are we not doing the "LJ Gift List" of random things that people can give us? It was always kind of cute). I am woefully behind on my Christmas shopping ([livejournal.com profile] rhymester, are you guys doing the holiday at your family's house? Should I just send your gift there?) and, as always, am stalled about what to give my older brother. It's tough when you have siblings that you don't spend much time with. Dang.

Still, in less than a week I will be at my parents house, where they will make dinner (I am so crap at that part of being a grownup, and have eaten cereal and/or Eggo waffles too often lately) and other important decisions and then we will have Christmas will 6 of the 7 Family (though technically with the newest baby, we are now 9, how cuuute) and then we will have 2nd Christmas with extended California family (and probably more Wii playing, for great hilarity) and my birthday (oh God) and then back here.

To conclude, I'd forgotten that in fifth grade you learn hard stuff. Right now, it's decimals and fractions and percents (and turning the one into the other and the other) and reviewing parts of speech in grammar. Because it turns out that 'ringed' isn't quite proper grammar. And neither is "Sara picked up Sara's book". XD
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Have lost all words must dance)
While I felt kind of sucky yesterday (too many potato chips), there's really nothing like a full family holiday. There will be 20 for dinner, and we made napkins and napkin rigns and Younger Sister and aunt were laughingly competing to make the best one (pillaging pine needles out of the yard). There will be pie and mashed potatoes and an jinormous turkey and mmmm.

After, probably (another) viewing of Hairspray or playing the Wii. OMG, Mom bought Mario & Sonic at the Olympics and it's soooo funny. You can run the 100m and throw a hammer, though I kept throwing it into the fence. Oops.

So HAPPY THANKSGIVING! Eats lots and laugh lots and enjoy (hopefully) a long weekend. *smushes*
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (1 and 1 is lots)
Made it to the Grandparents house last night with my aunt and cousin. Uncle and rest of cousins, other aunt and uncle and cousins, sister, dad, grand-aunt and aunt/uncle ish people (my family tree is so confusing) are due to arrive sometime this afternoon. Why yes, we are having 20 for Thanksgiving dinner. And you?

We are moments away from a shopping trip, where I am only going along because I need contact lens solution. Hopefully tonight I get to sleep in a bed or bed-like place by myself (I shared with my mom last night), which would be exciting. And, as you can see, I have internet and a book and a notebook and some paper. So all is well. I actually enjoy my extended family, despite the age difference between me and my cousins (and the fact that I drink less alcohol than the most sober of them).

But happy almost Thanksgiving to everyone! Yaaaaaaaaay.
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (1 and 1 is lots)
I was just sitting here and a handful of kids came to see if I wanted a glow stick. Or rather, if I had children who wanted one, but I also needed one for my pumpkin, because I don't have any matches. Though I'm almost out of food (especially Ramen *sadface*) so I might get some at the store. It's very cute: a witch's hat. Last night after I started feeling better, I got invited to my family's house because they were carving pumpkins. My oldest cousin was also putting the finishing touches on some of her college apps (early decision deadline is tomorrow). So that was exciting.

Yaaaaaaay Halloween.

Happy Halloween !!!
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Sunny cityscape)
Happy Valentine's Day! Hopefully you are all feeling loved and smiley. If you're reading this, I love you bunches. Even if I don't know you *hugs the world*

After getting yelled at for using one of the computers at B&N to look for a book (it was just sitting there begging for it) I am now using their wireless. For TWENTY-FIVE DOLLARS for only 3 visits. This is a rip-off. Yet, I greatly need to check my email. Ah, life :o)

Enjoy the day, all! I'm sure I'll post later. Cheers!
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Wash in a fight)
So it turns out my parents aren't going away, which lets me off the hook for dog-sitting. Unless they change their mind. They're like that. At least it means that I get to eat Mom-cooked food, as opposed to the random culinary experiments I concoct that never work out quite right. Seriously, who would have thought I could screw up rice? I don't get it.

My room at the moment is an absolute disaster area, presents from multiple gift-events sitting all over the place and starting to mix with random crap and dirty clothes. Tomorrow is a day for cleaning, if I can ever get myself out of bed at a decent hour. Which means that going to bed at 3am is no good. This is a bad pattern that I've created. Damn.

But my bed is so comfy. And I have bizzarely coherent dreams which my brain likes to treat like a book I'm reading ("no, we'll wake up later, I think we're getting to the good part. Only five more pages minutes, really..."). It's odd. But amusing, at least.

Tonight I watched Blade: Trinity with my parents. A little silly, but the snark really amused me. And how much does Ryan Reynolds remind me of Jason Lee? It's odd. Although, interesting coincidence, as I was writing what song I'm listening to, I remembered that Ryan is engaged to Alanis. So there, bizzarity of the night. Also tried to introduce them to Firefly; Dad kept going "twang twang..." everytime the music came back in. They'll warm up eventually. They think Wash is funny, at least. And Mal. They think Simon needs acting lessons. *cackle*

Oooh, and I changed my layout a bit. What do you think?

Hope all is well around my list of friends. Cheers!
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Stargate)
OMG, my birthday is on Friday. wow. I don't know how that happened. This is what happens when you have a birthday too near Christmas. It all... happens... so... fast. And... sleep now. Good god. Cheers?
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (We Are Family)
Happy Christmassy holiday type greetings, everyone! I trust all had a happy New Year and such? I hope so. I had what might have been the most fun New Years of my life this weekend. The apartment was overrun by six of my friends (plus one of their boyfriends at some points) and we had TONS of fun. I miss the feeling of hanging out with lots of people that you know well and are perfectly comfortable around. What with all the closeness that comes from four years of college and the dependency of close-quarters theatrical living, being together in a large group and enjoying ourselves is extremely easy. The hightlights:

*the decision that we needed to learn the entirity of Auld Lang Syne WITH THE SCOTTISH VERSES so that we could sing it at midnight. And then practicing it. Several times. LOUDLY.

*dinner at Joe Jrs. Diner (whose name gave us a good five-minute reminiscence of Sandra Bullock's landlord's son in While You Were Sleeping) and being flirted with by several workers, which scored us free soup samples and apple pie with ice cream. Not to mention amused looks as seven of us crammed into a booth.

*Drinks and dancing at Beauty Bar, who had a great deal of $15 dollar cover getting you a drink and champagne at midnight. Thusly, I consumed the following: a quasi-Dirty Girl Scout (we were missing the vodka), a lemon drop shot, a gin 'n tonic, and two vodka with cranberry (my new favorite). All between 10 and midnight. Needless to say, 1am brought us to the

*Infamous Parking Meter Incident of Aught 6: Director and I both clinging rather dizzily to the parking meter outside, neither of us ever sick, but still not willing to move on our own. Despite the large quantity of alcohol, we seriously discussed both how great it was to use the parking meter as leaning post, and how RIDICULOUS we must look. Good times.

*[livejournal.com profile] darkbluelizards "smuggling" me a glass of ice water. The bouncer following and checking to make sure I was okay and giving me tips on feeling better.

*Same bouncer looking really happy that I recovered enough later to come back inside and dance. He was a big fan of all of us, I feel.

*Dancing. I forgot I love dancing. Must do more of that.

*Having lots of good snuggly time with my friends. I love my friends a lot. And of course getting to approve of Biologist!Twin's boyfriend. Well done there. And English Major's boy as well, by long distance. Well done indeed *smirk*

I hope to start a Rentfic tonight(ish) and will hopefully post it in a day or two at the latest. There's one waiting for me on my computer back at my parents (didn't feel like bringing it back to NYC with me yet, v. heavy). Huzzah. So the real question: should I go for the "Christmas" or the "New Year" prompt? Decisions, decisions...

Aaand, apparently my stomach has decided I should be done with this entry and go lie down. Bad anxiety, no cookie for you!

Cheers!
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Rain condensation)
Because I'm lame, and sort of forgot to post about Christmas (or even before it): the transit strike ended, which was great. All in all, it wasn't terrible, just hard to get between the apartment and school. For Chrismas, we had the infrequent occurrence of the entire family: both older sisters, older brother, younger sister, friend of one sister and husband of another. Whew. Great fun.

At the moment, we're still relaxing from the present-haul this morning (all I can say shortly is that my parents will be introduced to Firefly shortly. Glee.) My goals for the next bit are as follows:

reclaim my room from older sister with husband (and dog)
finish a Rent!fic, for the love of G-, Sa-, someone. Perhaps I will cookie later.

And to entertain, a day late: Rent intro

We begin on Christmas Eve... )
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (genderfuck)
I hope everyone had a lovely Thanksgiving, retroactively. Or, if that's not your thing, that you enjoyed have a day off from work/school/etc.

It was lovely lovely to be home with my parents and the pets, and to see my Younger Sister (who I saw at 3am the night before in NYC, but that's a longer story) as well as to hang with Playwright!Twin and Biologist!Twin at my house. Sadly, the hanging out had to end yesterday, as they went city-ward and I tried to reconcile myself to the fact that I have approximately 70 pages to read in my developmental psych book, not to mention probably 20 pages of papers to write, before finals week. If they still call it that in grad school. Ew.

On the plus side, I saw Harry Potter again this weekend, and will be seeing RENT with [livejournal.com profile] rhymester tomorrow, with all luck. We should try and get the whole high school crowd together and go see the movie. [livejournal.com profile] sweet_obscenity? [livejournal.com profile] capedcrusader92? [livejournal.com profile] kumquat_queen? You up for it? I had almost forgotten how formative Rent was for high school. Frightening thought, really... does explain the heavy amount of Rent-based fanfic I write, though.

Hope all is well with everyone. I'll probably stick around with my parents tomorrow and head back into the city on Tuesday (boo class). Try and stay warm, kiddies, it's been cold lately :o) Cheers!
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (New England fall)
It's really cute; single Dove chocolate wrappers give you advice on how to live happier. I'v been told to smile before I go to bed (it makes you sleep better), laugh uncontrollably (it clears your mind), and smile in the mirror (it... makes you self-conscious?). So, I guess I'll work on that.

Still staying at my parents to churn out the monstrous paper that's due tomorrow. Which... I've started.. really. Mentally. Not so much. Dang. It'll work out.

In other news, I wrote another Rent ficlet, which I'll post today. The amusing side effect of writing Rent right before bed is that my mind plays through the soundtrack as I sleep.

Also, anyone who reads this still want a Christmas/Holiday/Winter/Just 'Cause I have them card? Leave your address here (it's screened, only I can read it). Be forewarned, they're more Christmassy themed, than not, but more "oooh, pretty snow!" than anything else XD

How's everyone? Peachy? Cold? Monday-ish? Hope you're well. Turkey day in t-minus THREE DAYS! Huzzah!!! The twins are coming home with me too! Yaaaaaaay.

Cheers!
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Over the Moon)
Um. So. Through a series of wacky events (and Fate, or ka) I get to see the Rent movie tonight. A full TWELVE DAYS EARLY. omg?

Gotta love New York. Will try to keep the squees down to a minimum (or at least an lj-cut) so you can decide if you want my verdict about it or not. Pretty sure I'm going to love it. Hell, the trailer gives me goosebumps.

And Playwright!Twin is coming with! Yaaaaaaay!

Hokay, laters. *flees* Cheers!
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Seasons of Love)
'Cause others are doing this and it made me remember: Wanna Christmas card? Leave me your address and tell me if you want mine back. It'll probably be something with Christmas trees on it. Or snow. I love snow. Cheers!

*goes off humming "Dreaming of a White Christmas"*

ETA: I'm screening the comments, so don't worry about releashing your addy to the whole wide world. Only I can read it Probably could have said that. *facepalm* :o)
