flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Flawless Rodney victory)
I finished my story for Remix! And it's like 3,000 words long! This is exciting and means that I probably should (can?) write more and just haven't yet. Was tons of fun. Hopefully will still seem like a good story later in the week; nice that it is done and yet I can still edit and poke at it on Archive of Our Own. And now to bed!
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Default)
I slept in for a long time, it was kind of awesome. And now Younger Sister is back from her weekend in The City and a new week can begin. In slightly more exciting news, [livejournal.com profile] mcshep_match is open! There is already the first pair of fics posted for the prompt "Thief in the Night". Very cool. I love fics.

Also, if you are jealous and wishing that you too could be part of the awesomeness that is the Away Team this fic challenge, they're still looking for BACKUP WRITERS here.

Maybe I'll say yes. I'm a glutton for last-minute fic scrambling ;o)

Also, there are approximately a million books I want to buy right now. Get thee to a nunnery library!*

*While I used to buy lots of books (and wow, now OWN lots of books, who'd have thought?) I've noticed that because I read so fast it is kind of financially stupid to buy a book that I will finish in a day or two. Thus, the library is awesome. Of course, there's always those pesky late fees because me and being on time never quite meet...
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Wrapped up in books)
Whew. 2,000 words just today. Story's done. I'm so... punctual? Also a little bummed, seeing as I was planning on making it slashy and creepy, and mostly the story was kind of over before all of that happened. Dang. But!

Done (Yuletide) = GOOD XD

Think I might head over to the grocery store to see if they have candy canes. Though they didn't before, which is ridiculous. Hmph.
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Default)
What is your favorite story that you've written? It could be a recent one or one that you wrote a long time ago. Maybe it's even just YOUR favorite, not the one that got the most comments or the one that made other people happy, but the one that puts a smile on your face every time you read it or remember that you wrote it. I was just reminiscing about all the great fic I've read from all of you and was curous what YOU thought about it XD

*toddles off*
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Washed up and put down Sam and Dean)
Woke up with a headache and no heat. Though now I've had a shower and am doing laundry, and will hopefully make mac and cheese for dinner. Mmm.

I should work on something fic-ish. I still have another coda to Taubla Rasa in my mind, and I am also woefully behind on this Friday's episode (oops). Then, of course, I have a whole list of stories and stuff that I need/want to write.

Never fear, there will be more Elementary!Verse fics. If nothing else, I want to scribble something about how they meet, because John with a group of kids running into Rodney is all kinds of funny. And I never did write a "shhh, the boys are sleeping" challenge piece, so maybe that.
flyakate: scene from the Philadelphia Story (Mike is in awe of CK Dexter Haven)
Would anyone be interested in an SGA fic challenge* where the only real requirement is that the fics need to have titles from episodes of the West Wing? The titles are here, for your consideration.

*This is totally borrowed from the Firefly-West Wing Title Challege of [livejournal.com profile] musesfool and the Supernatural-West Wing Title Challenge by [livejournal.com profile] luzdeestrellas (who both got it from [livejournal.com profile] liviapenn

Now look, a poll!

[Poll #1071518]

Please pimp this, because I want as many people to know and weight in as possible *looks at the rest of my friends list who are big SGA fans and probably have more people reading them than me*

Night!
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Big Damn Heroes ssssir)
Firefly/SGA crossover, awesome y/n?

XD
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Move along exercise)
Finally hauled my butt down the hill; went to Peet's for some iced coffee... mmmm, how have I missed this all my life? So much better than their espresso, actually. Yum.

Parents got home on Friday night; yesterday I "got" to go to the grocery store, Staples, and CVS to run errands. Fortunately, with the new car (who Younger Sister and I have started calling Cookie Monster, because of the bright blue color) it's quite fun.

I'd forgotten about the lovely mindlessness you get when you're exercising by yourself; the music like white noise in your ear while your brain has a chance to tumble* all the story ideas you've got going around and around, scratching up a new interesting angle. Between that and the shower, I've come up with several new wrinkles to the fics in progress, and some sentences for a SG:A au that I'd thought lost.

In other news, I'm rereading Dorothy L. Sayers books, which are great. I especially like The Five Red Herrings, because it's about artists and painters. After I finish Busman's Honeymoon (not so much moving in order, clearly), I'll pick up Strong Poison again, because Peter meeting Harriet is lovely.

Also, the exercise (perhaps?) seems to have helped jump start me back into thinking about jobs and stuff. Not that I wasn't, just got stalled out with sort of working for Dad. But hey, school hasn't started yet! *scurries*

Also, a question for the masses (though I overstate the amount of people reading my journal): do you think it would make more sense to apply to a tutoring organization or just adverstise on your own? Personal experience with this would be great, but just your opinion would also be extremely helpful.

[livejournal.com profile] capedcrusader92, when are you not working in the next bit? I want to call you but not accidentally harass you in the middle of work. Equally, [livejournal.com profile] rhymester, we should have a chat again. Hurray for my friends being in my country again XD

Finally, I might have posted the article about "what a teacher makes" but [livejournal.com profile] poisoninjest posted the amazing slam poet version on YouTube. Awesomeness personified. Makes me glad that I want to teach.

* I think [livejournal.com profile] copperbadge who says his brain is like a rock tumbler, and I always thought it worked so damn well as a concept.
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Teachers do it)
So I went to a professional development talk on social studies instruction, which was interesting but mildly repetitive. Now I'm sitting in the dining hall in the basement, working on my mess of schoolwork due soon. Miracle of miracles, I finished all the Curriculum work that I'd been "assigned" for today, so I won't feel like a total loser showing up to class. My plan for the next hour or two is to churn out some School Inquiry and maybe a little Portfolio work. I rock Powerpoint, can I just say. At least in the graphic organizer way. Sort of.

But I scribbled a whole page of notes for my paper during the conference today, so I'm feeling mildly confident. Wish me luck! And apologies for the ridiculousness that is my posts while I'm writing a paper.

Although yesterday's epiphany about Jensen Ackles as a caged bird still cracks me up

Ok wow, goodbye procrastination. Off to actually do something that can be crossed of a to-do list.
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (OMGWTFBBQ Simon)
Clearly I've gone crazy. Because I saw this and my first thought for icon keywords?

"i know why the caged bird sings"

OMGWTFANGELOU

*cackles*

flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (New Steps JOY!)
I've made three different, yet inter-related, to-do lists in the past six hours. I have a lot of writing/graphic organizer creating to do before my "working class" with my collaberative curriculum. But I've hit second wind, mostly because I just realized that I hadn't really eaten since some goldfish crackers at 5:30. Oops. Protein really makes you happier. Even if you at the beginning of your period. Crap.

But I've fleshed out a page rationale of my unit, a half-assesed organizer of the standards connection to our curriculum, part of the intro I'm in charge of.... and remembered to drop of my laundry! I rock. Despite watching most of Shattered Glass starring Hayden Christiansen procrastinating.

And! I made a 50+ playlist that I've called "Long Mix of Endless Happy" so that I don't run out of songs while I'm writing. It has most of the songs from Newsies. And "La Vie Boheme" from RENT, naturally.

I'll be the one other here, writing about care, curriculum, and the importance of supporting the child. Huzzah.
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Soon Will be King)
Damn you, people who update. All your "oooohs" about the new update page layout has prompted me to go check *grumps... cheerily*

I am finishing my portfolio, all that needs doing is printing of all the obscene amount of lesson plans. Whee? Oh, and the explanatory "I have no random things to put in here, 'cause I fail at having transcripts" note.

OMG I have made so much of my "growth" up. Reflectively, mind you XD

In other words, am leaving small children tomorrow. Will probably burst into tears, like a small child. No so much yay. At all.
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Student teaching general)
Minilesson done (w00t)
Shower taken (yay)
Alarm set (thank God)

Am now going to write my essay "backwards", ie write it and then make parts of it worse to print out as my "drafts". Why yes, I've been a student for too long, why do you ask?

*scampers off, squeaky clean*

And wow, why is my essay so LONG? And I don't even know if I can make it shorter... hmmm.

eta:

Me: Well, my essay is crap, but it clocks in at 3 pages.
Older Sister: That should be the TITLE!
Me: .... *cracks up*
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Dancing with myself)
Well, The Nutcracker last night was gorgeous and tons of fun. I hadn't ever heard or seen most of the music and dancing since I was way little, so that was a lot of fun.

I got my first Christmas card! [livejournal.com profile] poisoninjest, you win! Hopefully everyone who's wanting one of my cards will be okay if they aren't exactly... on time. As it were. I hope to get the bulk of them done this Friday/Saturday (otherwise known as after classes are done and work is due) and mailed out before I fly to California. So, be on your toes (or have your mailboxes on their toes. Or something).

If you want one and haven't let me know, there is still time! Email me your address at KatStarling9@yahoo.com. [livejournal.com profile] winkingstar, I had your address last year, but I've lost it. You want a card? XD Also, [livejournal.com profile] capedcrusader92 and [livejournal.com profile] kumquat_queen, do you have an address for LimeKid? Please and thank you?

In other belated news, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO [livejournal.com profile] villainny!!! I totally meant to wish you some good cheer and lovely things yesterday. Oops? You rock, Nny.

My goal for the night is to write a minilesson and finish my essay. Ew. Oh, and take a shower. And probably renew my journal. Sometime.

AND SET MY ALARM DEAR GOD. Why do I never remember to do that on Sunday night and am therefore always late to class on Monday? Ick.

In happier procrastinatory news, some kind soul has uploaded the 1978 Muppet Chrismas special (where they all go spend the holiday with Fozzy's mom). It's the best thing EVER! Yay YouTube!

Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5, Part 6, Part 7
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (OMGWTFBBQ Simon)
Reason I haven't updated in a while is because of the end-of-semester work that is eating me alive. Which seems even more ridiculous because my days are filled with student teaching and I keep getting so tired at night. Well, a 10-15 page paper calls, so wish me luck. Hopefully most of it can be cribbed cut and pasted gathered from the GOING ON 26 pages of data analysis wtf. Wish me luck? Or broken limbs? Or something?

Also, if you missed the absurdly early Holiday Card post, it's over here. Screened, of course :o)

A week and four days from now? I'll be in California. Here's hoping...
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (CSI family)
As I walk by my dad's office, he and my mom are hunched over his computer. Apparently, they are networked with the one that I'm using, which also used to belong to my dad.

Me: Is that my computer?

Dad: We think so.

Mom: Yeah. Do you have a document called "If CSI had a band"? [I saved last night's AIM conversation for future self-amusement]

Me: ...Yeah.

Mom: Oh. *amused* Well, you can throw away any of your dad's files you still have.

Me: ...ok. *flees*

FACEPALM AT LIFE.

Though not at the CSI band, because that was hot stuff. It was called Radioactive Butterflies: Nick was the lead singer (peer-pressured into eyeliner and leather pants by Greg and Warrick), Greg the lead guitar, Warrick on drums, Cath on keyboard, with Sara as the emo bass player.

Grissom was their manager, naturally. Ecklie was the bitter roadie/sound tech, who spends most of his time getting hassled by the boys (think test tubes and drumsticks thrown at him). Their rival band had Hodges, and Archie and Doc Robinson in it. Battle of the CSI bands, anyone? *snerk*
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Simon/Kaylee)
Working on my autobiography. Should probably turn off Fight Club, because as much as I like to think that movies as background noise works, it doesn't. I keep getting sidetracked by the pretty. Which randomly reminded me of thinking about pairings, namely Simon/Kaylee from Firefly (which had a whole bunch of episodes on SciFi Channel today. It was so exciting.)

Mostly, I'm intrigued by why Simon/Kaylee works. I mean, besides the pretty. Because they have such different personalities, and it's so easy to see Simon as just pining for going back to the Core, and Kaylee just wanting the romantic fairytale, but not quite fitting in. I'd like to think it works, but there enough evidence in the show (and the added tensions in the movie, which just ups all the contrasts between Simon and River and the crew) that I could really see it going either way. The same argument, with some refinements, could be made for Mal/Inara too, I feel. This depends, of course, on the way the author sees it, how they add up all the moments in canon to some deeper motivation. That's the fun part, I guess. Doing the math.

Anyone's thoughts on the subject would be great; especially those that help me refine my ideas about the relationships for my fic (which I WILL finish, as soon as I write thie damn autobiography).

Have exchanged Fight Club for Evita, which I've seen more times and will ignore easier. Excellent.
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Excercise)
I find it so ironic that when I had to make a iambic pentameter monologue battling my tragic flaw in high school (we were studying Macbeth)... and it was Procrastination.

Surprising, isn't it not.

Though I have now created a playlist to write with (to? for? some preposition here) and am trying to decide how late to stay up or just get up early. Hard to do both. Hard also to make decisions at 2am. Hmmm.

Tired has hit all of a sudden. Fight against it! Noooooooo, sleep is no good yet. Neither is stomach cramps. Bad body, no cookie.

Working plan: write for another hour, then try to get some sleep for a bit. Then bang out the rest of it.

At least I have a new skirt from the Gap to wear tomorrow. Er, today. It's purple! And can be twirled around in; I find this a great asset in a skirt. Like a small child.

To conclude:

Dear Curriculum Unit:

Unlike the song on my iPod, you are NOT my joy. Nor will ever be.

No love,

Me

ETA @ 3:47am - OKay, gonna head to bed for 3-4 hours. We'll see how this all looks in the morning. Or rather LATER in the morning...
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Inter-House Loyalties)
It's the day before my final project is due and I'm... really not very far in. Not that this suprises me at all, or probably you. I'm the most unCapricorn Capricorn there is.

Also, its HOT. Like a hot hot thing. And we have no air conditioning. At all. So it's... hot. Too darn hot.

I feel like there must be lots of icre cream and water and cold things to get me through this night. Let it be so decreed!

*waves hand regally*
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (School)
I just wrote the phrase:

create a discursive community of critical dialogue

This? Is why I love education papers. i just used 7 words to say "talk about stuff".

4 and a half hours til class *flees*
