So I was looking at xkcd and this made me stop... think... and then try to decide between laughing out loud and hiding under my bed.

I give you House... of Pancakes.

And whatever cooks there, cooks alone :D )

The school I'm subbing at (which I might call Labyrinth, because of the maze-like construction fencing) is so adorable and the two teachers who I work with seemed appreciative and happy to have me there. They're both really nice, so that's excellent (although to be fair, everyone I have met at Labyrinth is really friendly). The low point was that my alarm didn't go off yesterday morning, so instead of waking up at 6:30, I woke up at 7:45. Fortunately, we live really close, but still, scared the crap out of me. Needless to say, I went to Target last night to buy an alarm clock.

Also! So productive of me, went for a walk to Peets (yum) and am now going to shower and do some laundry. Granted, it is already 4pm (oops) but hey, it's Saturday, man.

Finally, if you haven't read Written by the Victors which is the most amazing meta, academic, hot, convoluted and lovely look at Atlantis as a home and the SGC as a military institution and what happens when those two ideals can no longer coexist. I especially recommend this for those who love the idea of history as contradictory and discursive, because this story embodies that wholeheartedly.

It reminds me of the way that Stephen King creates an outside world for his story (often with excerpts of authorities, like in Carrie) or the meta-analytic tone of House of Leaves (without the crazy). So... yeah. Go get your mind blown.

I finished House of Leaves for great insanity and terror-production. Honestly, I hadn't thought I was that creeped out (although I COULD NOT read it in my house at night, which is odd) and one night I was doing fine and then had a nice little panic attack while reading. Though, honestly, it's hard to tell if the panic attack was really all that prompted by the book; this is me we're talking about here ;o) So, here are my organized thoughts, of a sort.

Here a spoiler, there a spoiler, and another little spoiler )

On the whole, I really liked it, and look forward to reading it again. But not for a while. I'll suck some other people in first XD

I have decided that YouTube.com wins at the internet. Why? Because, not only do they have almost every opening from EVERY tv show of my childhood (Hey Dude, anyone? The Gummi Bears? Kids Incorported?!?) They have the first episode of David the Gnome! I LOVED that show. It was great; although, now having watched it again after waaaaaay too many years, God it was so weird. I mean, let alone that it's starts with David in the bathtub (which is kinda creepy) but that he can "talk to all gnomes by telepathy". Just... wow. The 80s were sure special. Apparently, they also have episodes of Salute Your Shorts, so go check it out! Reminisce with your childhood. Or mine.

On entirely another note, I am remembering to give some of my preliminary thoughts about House of Leaves. I haven't gotten to any of the weird formatting parts yet (not counting the often several page long footnotes. yay discursive footntoes!) and have had a couple days off from reading it. Mostly, I am not-quite-ashamed to admit, is because I haven't had time to read it until night. And while I apparently had no problems reading it in the tent while camping, I can't even think too much about it here after nightfall. I don't know if it's because I haven't gotten my house's sounds down yet or what. *shivers*

More specifically, cut so as not to spoil )

Has anyone read The Whalestoe Letters? Any good? Also, I've heard that houseofleaves.com is a great resource. Any other recommendations would be fabulous.

Tomorrow, Mom is off to the "other side" of the island to pick up Younger Sister, so I might tag along and go to the Barnes and Noble. If nothing else, I'm short a blank book to write in.

To conclude, dumb question: how do you make one of those solid lines in an lj-entry? They would be so useful. Help me, pleasethanks. XD
