I've been working on an "episode guide" to plan out the plot arcs for the first season of The Diogenes Boys (three cheers for [livejournal.com profile] isurrendered!) I'm trying to make it at least mildly historically accurate (or in the realm thereof) so thought I'd make a page for all these links. Enjoy, I know I will!

Today is the day of the big Remix reveal! Of course, I've been working (and lazy, don't forget the lazy) so any and all dates and deadlines fall out of my head. But yes, I wrote a story, it was awesome!

First, my story First Monday got remixed by [livejournal.com profile] darsynia into Acceptable Risk (the Slow Build Remix) and is awesome and hot, so go tell them what a wonderful job they did!

And THEN, I had the awesome opportunity to play with a story by [livejournal.com profile] wickedwords, so I took Jumper Lesson and made Determined (Soldier Boy Remix). I love the whole idea of the gene and how it changes you (oh, SGA science, you are awesome), and Lorne's fear in the original that it wouldn't work right. So I played with that, and how that kind of difference (and the difference that structures the community of Atlantis) kind of works. And made it second person, which was kind of fun. Go read all her stuff, though, because it's all super cute and awsome. I love Lorne to bits; might have to write more fic for him. *cuddles*

I will repost my story on here later today, and update my fic list (helpfully under Flya.fic heeee, I am funny) on the sidebar.

For now, I am off to do some dishes and generally tidy, most likely. Also, Tivo is recording "Sunday" which will be painfully awesome to watch later.

To conclude, it is almost 80 outside. Woohoo, happy Saturday!
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (McShep Match Away Team)
I had yummy brunches with [livejournal.com profile] prismakaos this morning, and then went home and was suckered into a long nap by my cat. He was just sitting there, and then he cuddled on my hand... and that was it. Mmm. Then I warmed up some leftover rice and chicken and mushroom stuff (YUM) and am gearing up to picking up my room and probably fold some laundry and take a shower.

Last night I was out until midnight at the house of one of my friends who works at Labyrinth: her husband's friend was having a going away party and I was... integral to the party? I dunno, but there was delicious cookies and pigs in blankets and lots of karaoke singing. I got 98% playing "My Name is Jonas" on Guitar Hero (dammit, I only missed three notes! It was crazy!) and got to sing "One Week" by the Bare Naked Ladies.

Excitingly, Remix Redux VI is open!!! So go to [livejournal.com profile] remixredux08 and look at all the pretties! Someone took my story, First Monday, and make it into an awesome look at John and Rodney and hot and mnerf... go read Acceptable Risk (the Slow Build Remix), because it is great!

My person liked their story, which is awesome. If you can guess which one is mine, I will give you a drabble! You never know, you might find it :o)

To conclude, I squeaked in at the wire and am now writing for [livejournal.com profile] mcshep_match on the Away Team! So that's... awesome and terrifying, by turns. But woohoo!

Slightly better, sleep-wise today. I drank lots of water and way less caffeine yesterday, which probably helped. I also need to make an effort on non-teaching days to actually leave the house; it makes a huge difference and means I can't sit down and have brain loss due to it being sucked out by the tv or the computer screen.

I almost had a job tomorrow, but the teacher that was going to be out because of recovering from a root canal (oww) turns out to be fine (in a manner of speaking) and so will be in. Oh well. I need to do some work for my dad, anyway, which means I need to call him. But first, actually getting dressed--the perk of working at home is that you can do it in your pjs XD

On the fic front, sign up for Yuletide, the challenge where you write and are given fics from "obscure" fandoms. Hey, where else are you going to fill that urge for reading The American President fanfic... or something. If you don't want to commit to writing, you can always be a pinch-hitter. Just in case you hadn't heard how I wrote a threesome Blade: Trinity fic (though I do over tell that story) ;o) Or finally finish my "how Rusty meet Basher" caper.

So, clothes, Starbucks, do some work. Maybe I will reward myself with time on some of my writings later. Perhaps one last [livejournal.com profile] mcsmooch before the challenge ends? Also, if you haven't read them, they're all adorable, hot, achy and perfect by turns. Go look!

ALso, wow, I need to put on socks because I am freeeezing. brr.
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (OMGWTFBBQ Simon)
I mentally said "screw it" about waking up early and so slept in, guilt-free it turns out, because no one called me. I have also accomplished multiple things today, as shown by my revised to-do list.

Today:
Go for walk
Email Labyrinth school teachers rec: Growing Readers
Email Lynn re: syllabus
Call Forest School about subbing Friday
Call gas/electric to switch name on bill
Continue cleaning room
Make chicken for dinner

Friday:
Sub at Forest school(!)
Fall over*
call Diana
Pick up the "art" that Diana and I made last week

This Weekend:
Buy SPN season 2 at Target
organize dvds somehow

I have been having crazy narrative dreams the past few nights. And the most amazing part is that they're crossovery as well. First, two nights ago, was a dream where the characters from my original YA novel seemed to be merging with The Nanny Diaries (clearly, my expectations of his after school job were more time-consuming than originally planned ;o))

THEN, I had a dream where John and Rodney were little kids... on the Enterprise. Which was all kinds of awesome and might have to be written at some point.

Finally, last night and this morning was a dream which was some crazy cross between The Sound of Music and Corram Boy. Perhaps with a splash of Nanny Diaries.

I swear, my brain *shakes head*

So, off to do some work and/or take a walk. Bye!

flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Circle complete by another's happiness S)
I was sitting here checking my email and had a total Elizabethtown moment (Younger Sister and I watched it a couple days ago and it's so corny and mildly terrible, but great just the same) when Orlando Bloom has just left tons of messages on his phone and sits on his couch and waves his hands at his phone saying "Caaaalll me baaaaack".

I'd like to get emailed back by the job I applied for. I know I sent this last night, but still. Instant gratification, please :o)

Still, in more pressing matters, I need to get my butt in gear and pack 'cause we're moving tomorrow. Although, seeing as a bed is most likely coming from CT along with all my junk from NYC, it's mostly clothes and stuff with an inflatable mattress. But still.

A while back, people were doing a "post from your WiPs" meme. Here are some, for great (?) amusement.

4 Bits from 4 Fics )
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (All the roads lead me there Sam and Dean)
I was thinking of writing, more that I was thinking of writing the... several challenge fics I need to write, and I thought of something:

Does Sam have a middle name? Do either of them?

I've been tooling around on the internet and haven't found conclusive evidence. So, if you have personal fanon about middle names for the boys, or have actually seen it somewhere, I'd like that.

Not that it totally matters, but it's the little things, you know? Appreciate it!

flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Default)
Clearly, I can't be arsed to post about student teaching, but I finish two fics in the last two days? Nice to know where my brain's priorities are... *grumbles* For the record, I don't use the word "arsed" in normal conversation because, not being British or anything else-ish, I cannot pull it off. But I wish I could. Moving on.

I am now two days down in student teaching, and the kids are lovely, though noisy and tiring. It'd almost be too much--too much stimuli, too much everything--but then one of them holds your hand on the way down the hall and it just kills you with how small their hand is, how cute they are. Wow. So yeah, a good time. Will post more explicitly under the filter.

But there is/was fic! First, yesterday I posted a Supernatural story, Alma Mater Studiorum on [livejournal.com profile] spn_flashback. The other thing that I just finished and sent was an Ocean's 11 story. So go read Courage and Convictions! It is Rusty/Linus which is kind of R! There is junk food! Yay.

Okay, off to blather about student teaching (hopefully) and make my lunch. 'Cause I am sekritly a small child going off to elementary school every morning. :D?
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Herding Gods is difficult)
If you have a copy of American Gods by Neil Gaiman and HAVE read it (don't want to unintentionally spoil someone), I'm working on something, and I need to know mild spoiler, don't click if you haven't read, just in case ) ETA: Found it, nevermind. God bless Google Book Search

I would have found out at Borders, but we didn't make it there (although Costco was a blast, as usual). On the other hand, cool aunt is here! And we are having cockatail hour, wherein I will have a soda :o)

Good luck with orientation tomorrow, [livejournal.com profile] rhymester! Let me know how it goes, although of course the answer will be "fantabulously".

Back in NYC by Wednesday! Both happy and sad about that... so off to make the most of the next not quite-two days. *fleeeeees*
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (River Beauty)
Shit, I'm having a dilemma. A Firefly fic dilemma (which I guess are better than physical ones, but anyway). So there's my story and it's almost done (like if I stayed up until like 3 I could probably pound it out, but no, sleep) and will finish tomorrow, but there's this bit that I have outlined about Simon and Kaylee, and it'd be cute and everything. But the story is a Mal-story, from mostly him (like his speech patterns and everything) and Simon and Kaylee aren't even in the same place as Mal, so that'd be so jarring, to go back there.

My other option is to finish the fic (with no Simon/Kaylee cuteness), then write a one-shot short of thing that is just their bit. Set in the midst of the fic. Sort of a companion piece. That'd work, don't you think? I even have a title! And it fits! OMG!

So I might do that... anyone have an opinion? Thought? Epiphany? All are welcome.

Also? My fic? Is 6,824 words *dances the dance of "OMG Long! (for me)"*
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Firefly Tet)
Wrote lots of words in my Firefly caper fic! It is, at present, 4,980 words! This is like the longest thing that I've written that I will finish sooner rather than later.

Of course, when that's done I need to write a fic for [livejournal.com profile] takethehouse, and a Supernatural piece for the prompt "Sam and academics". The O11 one will be hardest, mostly because it will necessitate watching the movie again and looking close at the subtext. *wicked grin*

And I go back to NYC in only 6 days! This is both too long and toooooooo short.

That, and I said I would get up at 7am for a walk. Ewwwww. Clearly, I was temporarily insane.

But, to return to topic, if anyone is up to beta a Firefly fic (gen) and a Ocean's 11 fic (approx. 1000 words, most likely Ruty/Linus), OR a Supernatural fic (DEFINITELY not Wincesty, but that's all I know), let me know!

Which reminds me, I had a bunny for a Stephen King's It ficlet. Crossed over with Neil Gaiman's American Gods. It was so entertaining. Must write... everything, apparently.
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Curtis boys family)
It's funny when you forget what you've copied and pasted until you accidentally hit ctrl-v instead of ctrl-b. Earlier today, it was a generated plot bunny for Without a Trace:

Danny's a teacher, Martin's a single parent raising his nieces after his sister and brother-in-law are killed.

It sounds so interesting, don't you think, as a concept? Yes. I think so XD

The other one was part of a comment paraphrasing a comment from [livejournal.com profile] aesc: I try to write like it's an episode, except with a lot more Danny and Martin (and maybe a bit more sex) than we usually get. It sums up perfect WaT fanfic, to me. Because the seasons do such a crummy job besides giving lots of tantalizing backstory. Which, I suppose, is the purpose of fanfiction: to take canon and illuminate and expand on it. Or, in some cases, make it never exist.
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Fight Club)
A very apt quote from Crossing Jordan tonight (which, incidentally, was a very good episode):

"Love is like malaria. It gets under your skin and stays there; it might be dormant for a long time, even years, then pop back up."

It really works for me. Needs to be in a fic, really. *nods decisively*

The cold manifested itself into a weird cough thing that stuck in my throat and made me sound absolutely FABULOUS today. Sadly, if this trend continues into the morning, I don't think I can go into my "job". It seems like it would be unfair to infect all the small children, decidedly.

Also, I could then baby my cold and insure that I really get over it. That would be really, really good; because I don't have time in the next three weeks to be sick.

Writing Fanfic

While one of the most helpful things when writing fanfic is to know your source canon well, while also reading what else is in fandom (especially if cliche-fic is your thing), here are a couple resources that I've found when writing.

* Criminal Minds

*The Criminal Minds Fan Wiki is an excellently organized website that I used sometimes if I was watching a kind of creepy episode and want to know who did it (because sometimes I'm a big wuss, shut up). However, it is also a nice place to go remind oneself of exactly when Reid thought it was a good idea to invite JJ on a date (season 1, episode 4... around his 24th birthday, cute) or that apparently Prentiss and Morgan both love the same author (Kurt Vonnegut). Hopefully this will prompt me to write more Criminal Minds fic?

* Firefly

* Firefly Pinyin because it's hard to find the right words for the terrible things that Jayne swears if you don't know Mandarin. Started by [livejournal.com profile] phoenixchilde while RPing at [livejournal.com profile] milliways_bar. This is an excellent resouce to sprinkle your fic with. Just don't go over board, dong ma?

* Firefly Wiki to help you with planet names, random factoids from the show and movie and other entertaining stuff.

* Harry Potter

* Hopefully you've been to the Harry Potter Lexicon, because it's the definitive place for random facts and fictions you want to know (or not, as the case may be) about the books. Has lots of JKR's interview "canon" pieces and cool essays about everything from exactly how many students there are at Hogwarts to a fascinating theory trying to make sense of JKR's math in regard to the ages of the Weasley brothers.

* Stargate: Atlantis

* Wikipedia entry on SGA, which is actually pretty decent. Also helpful because it has links to detailed (especially on the part of John) entries on most of the characters and a list of all the episode arcs. Especially because I came late to the SGA party, I find all this junk useful.

* Supernatural

* The Winchester Journals is a site that takes note of all the info from the show, if you can't remember what the hell the dead guy's name was in "Heart" (Glen) or Dean's alias is "Asylum" (Nigel Tufnell). Counts the comic books as canon info, if that's your thing. Helpful for names, places, demons, etc., and updated through the current episode. Awesome.

Reading Fanfic

These are a collection of fanfic websites and journals that I read on a semi-regular basis. Noted if single or multi-fandom.

* BAU Fic: Criminal Minds Fanfiction is a Livejournal community that has both gen and varied slash pairings in Criminal Minds. Popular pairings include Hotch/Reid, Reid/Morgan, Hotch/Rossi, and Rossi/Prentiss. Fair warnings: multi-chaptered fics are posted in progress, which can make for a choppy reading experience. Also, quality may vary, as with any fic community. For straight Rossi/Prentiss (no pun intended?), check out Rossi/Prentiss Fans.

* Due South Archive (Hexwood) is, as you might have guess, a soley Due South fanfic archive. I found this back in high school with [livejournal.com profile] capedcrusader92 and [livejournal.com profile] alemara (when we were wee ickle fangirls) and it was still on Hexwood. Lots of great fic here, het, gen, slash, either Ray, Fraser/Turnbull, you name it, they probably have it. All ratings, which was... my first smut experience in high school. Yay?

* Pretty FBI Boys is a Without a Trace archive. I still have a great affection for this show, all its mistakes aside, because I've read some gorgeous fanfic there. And it's how I discovered [livejournal.com profile] aesc, so it's all a win! The site also has icons and screencaps of season 1.

* Unfit for Society Recs is a journal manned by [livejournal.com profile] musesfool of a large variety of recs from a handful of fandoms. The stories are invariably awesome and each rec comes with a summary and some reason for the rec, which I always find helpful. Also, she gives RemixRedux and Yuletide Recs during the "season".

* While We Tell Of Yuletide Treasure, otherwise known as Yuletide, is a yearly holiday fic exhange, only it's focus is "obscure fandoms". Wishing there were more Little Women stories in your life? Wishing you could find an audience for your Eerie, Indiana slash? (Not that I've written any, and please don't share it with me if you have ;o) ) It's lots of fun to participate in, and even more fun to wander around afterwards and look at the hysterical and lovely fanfics that people come up with.
flyakate: ungrammatical sentence (teachers do it in red pen)
See, I usually list my fic alphabetically, but with the John/Rodney Elementary!verse stories, that didn't seem right after I'd set up the list. So, instead, I put them in "chronological" order. (Updated April 2013, as the emotional 'notes' in each piece didn't fit in the original order). Reasoning and list as follows:

Say Hello: This is the real beginning, where John meets Rodney, though (as happens) it was not the first story I wrote. So I guess if you're following along at home, you also didn't get to read this first. Sorry? :o) John has many references to the beginning of the school year, so I would say maybe mid-October.

Rainy Day: A little drabble of the boys on a sleepy Saturday.

Thermoregulation: As always, I was thinking about the boys in their universe and wondered how they'd deal with the oppressive heat of the summer, because on the east coast it gets so. darn. hot. I am a big fan of the thought of Rodney having an argument with John... while striving to remain cool flat on the floor. Hahaha.

Teachers Do It in Red Pen: This happens a little less than a year after "Say Hello"

October and Feburary: This is a drabble that happens later in the John/Rodney relationship.

Universal Gravitation: Set in late that weird sort of winter/spring time of year.

Overflow: Probably March, because that's what happens in March on the east coast, with weird warmth towards the end of the month and yet still the odd snow storm. Or, of course, plumbing accident ;-)
Lips and Hearts: Mother's Day is in May. So the story is the time leading up to it, beginning of May and school's nearing the end, which is in early June, because Atlantis Academy is a private school and they cater to work around professional college schedules a lot. John should probably be writing his report cards, but I hedged a bit and said they were soon.

Shutterbug will always be last, for now, because it is by its very structure a looking back on stuff, including meeting (and falling for) Rodney. So, later than the other fics by a healthy margin, though I'm a little fuzzy on how much. It's like tv science, convenient and yet vague!

*

When there are more, I will write more. *bows*
