half my life's in books' written pages
Sep. 8th, 2007 03:29 pmThe school I'm subbing at (which I might call Labyrinth, because of the maze-like construction fencing) is so adorable and the two teachers who I work with seemed appreciative and happy to have me there. They're both really nice, so that's excellent (although to be fair, everyone I have met at Labyrinth is really friendly). The low point was that my alarm didn't go off yesterday morning, so instead of waking up at 6:30, I woke up at 7:45. Fortunately, we live really close, but still, scared the crap out of me. Needless to say, I went to Target last night to buy an alarm clock.
Also! So productive of me, went for a walk to Peets (yum) and am now going to shower and do some laundry. Granted, it is already 4pm (oops) but hey, it's Saturday, man.
Finally, if you haven't read Written by the Victors which is the most amazing meta, academic, hot, convoluted and lovely look at Atlantis as a home and the SGC as a military institution and what happens when those two ideals can no longer coexist. I especially recommend this for those who love the idea of history as contradictory and discursive, because this story embodies that wholeheartedly.
It reminds me of the way that Stephen King creates an outside world for his story (often with excerpts of authorities, like in Carrie) or the meta-analytic tone of House of Leaves (without the crazy). So... yeah. Go get your mind blown.
