flyakate: Rodney McKay in an orange fleece feeling victorious (flawless Rodney victory)
Title: Teachers Do It in Red Pen
Fandom: Stargate Atlantis
Summary: "This must be Thursday. I never could get the hang of Thursdays." - Douglas Adams
Rating: PG for mild swearing
Notes:Just when I thought I'd never write in this 'verse (or fandom again), I finally was able to smooth this one out. Multitudes of thanks to [personal profile] winkingstar , who looked at it eons ago and gave me the excellent edit of "this sounds like it's two stories at once" and thus the epic renovation began.

Teachers Do It in Red Pen )
flyakate: Summer Glau dancing from Firefly (commala come one the dance in nearly don)
About a million years ago, I had an idea for an SGA/Firefly fusion. And wrote up a whole rambly piece about what that would look like... and did nothing else. But there's still some... meat there, some energy that I could try to mine out.

So I'm posting it, in the hopes that it will continue to rocktumble (a term I stole from
[personal profile] copperbadge, I fear, but totally accurate, a rolling and rocking and refining of a concept from dross to gold) and maybe even make somethign ficcish.

As an alternate fusion history, I think it's pretty awesome.

So I give you the backstory for the not!story (which I had tentatively called "Ending the Alphabet" after the
song by the Mountain Goats. Any thoughts (or pushes towards actual story-building) highly encouraged.

flyakate: Rodney McKay in an orange fleece feeling victorious (flawless Rodney victory)
Hi everybody, so I was wandering around AAO3, like you do, adding in old fics and fibrillating about my Yuletide sign-up and I found that someone had pod booked the entirety of my Elementary!verse AU where John teaches 2nd grade and Rodney is a college professor and they are all kinds of adorable together.

So if you are looking for an hour of adorableness to listen to, go download the podbook here, and marvel at the awesomeness of [livejournal.com profile] winkingstar, [livejournal.com profile] rhea314 and [livejournal.com profile] bessyboo!

Aww, man, it's been too long since I've thought of those stories. Makes me want to brush off the almost-finished story in that 'verse that I've had kicking around forever and finally post it. Hey, it could happen.

:o)
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Always got your back McShep)
This is really a link to a bunch of links: [livejournal.com profile] elderwitty compiled a mountain of code to make a linked version of [livejournal.com profile] anonymoouse's amazing list of McShep AUs, sorted by John's occupation. Many of them are stories I've read before (some recced here, actually) and I'm very excited to read the ones that are new to me. So should you!

Younger Sister and I went and saw Fantastic Mr. Fox, which was quirky and amusing and very much in the vein of Wes Anderson's other movies. I hadn't read the source material in quite some time, so whatever differences/additions (for example, Dahl isn't quite so dry in his humor as Wes Anderson, though there are extreme similarities that made it work for me) weren't noticeable to me. George Clooney does a great job with humor, in my opinion. He was misused as a romantic lead, IMO, he's much quirkier than you'd think.

*The subject line comes from the the poem "Cherry Stones" by A.A. Milne:

Tinker, tailor, soldier, sailor, rich man, poor man, beggar man, thief,
Or what about a cowboy, policeman, jailer, engine driver, or a pirate chief?
Or what about a ploughman or a keeper at the zoo,
Or what about a circus man who lets the people through?
Or the man who takes the pennies on the roundabouts and swings,
Or the man who plays the organ or the other man who sings?
Or What about the rabbit man with rabbits in his pockets
And what about a rocket man who's always making rockets?
Oh it's such a lot of things there are and such a lot to be
That there's always lots of cherries on my little cherry tree

It kind of wants me to take the poem and write a whole mess of drabbles of the AU variety. Any suggestions? (Bonus points for making Reid into a pirate chief or John and Rodney as an organ playing singing duo! Bones and Booth work for the zoo? The possibilities are endless! hahahaha)
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Stu and Larry are my fake boyfriends)
I'd forgotten how much I enjoyed the Black Irish inherent hotness of black hair and bright blue eyes. I periodically record episodes of CSI: NY and I've discovered (re-discovered?) not only am I still a huge fan of Gary Sinise, but Eddie Cahill--he plays a detective on the show and is awesomely sarcastic and New Yorkishly accented--has these stunning blue eyes that take me back to countless Saturday nights watching The Practice with Dylan McDermott and being mesmerized by just how PRETTY he was.

So that was a happy place realization... which then meant that I wandered off onto the internet and read lots of fabulous stories in a universe where the New York CSI department instead investigates supernatural crime and it's creepy and hot. So go explore [livejournal.com profile] stellaluna_'s BSI'verse. This made me wonder how that would work for our boys and girls in Criminal Minds... which meant that I lost a few hours in [livejournal.com profile] amichevole's WiP story where Prentiss is a vampire and Morgan is a werewolf. Oh! Which reminds me of the awesome [livejournal.com profile] mcshep_match story where John Sheppard just happens to be a were-mountain lion. Hey, it happens? At least it does in Where the Brave Dare Not Go by [livejournal.com profile] telesilla XD

This icon strikes me as highly appropriate, even though Adam Storke is not Eddie Cahill (though might also have the same coloring, so it still kind of works, and I was such a Larry fangirl from The Stand, oh goodness).

And I've been working on posting this since yesterday (when I lost half the night to CSI: NY fanfic, man, I don't have time to watch a new show, knock it off, brain) so I should post it now.

Don't even get me started on accents, sheesh, Simon Baker has this awesome Australian accent and is so cheery and blond and smiley, it totally makes every episode of The Mentalist (though he does act "American", which makes me want there to be an episode where he has to trick someone by pretending to be Australian... please?)

There aren't enough words for how much I should be sleeping, but just posting this to say that Remix has been revealed and I wrote...

Postcards from the Edge (Three Chord Overdub) [Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Oz, PG]

For me was written...

Just Breathe (The Artifact of Vision Remix) [Stargate: Atlantis, John/Rodney, PG] by the awesomely talented [livejournal.com profile] crysothemis

And a rec that you should read...

a sam adams moment, which is a John POV gen SGA/Bones AU by [livejournal.com profile] siriaeve that is brilliant and perfect and makes me want to mash those two worlds together forever. A million &hearts

This story made today top yesterday (where the waiter and busboy of our restaurant asked Younger Sister if she was Ellen Page from Juno), so in other words, this weekend was awesome (despite cold of Impending Doom)

XD
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Never too old for this Hotch and Rossi C)
Okay, so a while ago I was hit with the idea that the Taylor Swift song You Belong with Me (warning, the link sings) is totally a Hotch/Rossi song, where Rossi is lamenting that Hotch is always stuck on the phone with Haley, and Haley is complainy and why doesn't Hotch notice that Rossi has always been there for him in blond pigtails? Seriously, it cracks me up and I can totally see this as a fanvid (you know that there are way too many good shots of Thomas Gibson for "he has a smile that can light up the whole town")

Add to this the fact that I woke up this morning from a dream in which Reid (and the gang) were all on either Top Chef or Project Runway (which reminds me that if you haven't read John Sheppard's Guide to Surviving Project Runway it is amazing and hilarious and you should) and poor Reid was having some kind of crisis and talking on the phone to Prentiss.

-

So that's the state of my brain right now. How's with yours? Also, summer camp started and my campers are hilarious and nice and I just hope I can think of a whole bunch of things to do with them! :o)
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Stars get in your eyes John)
A poem for Poetry Month which I saw on [livejournal.com profile] musesfool's journal and seems very John and Rodney-ish in my Elementary!verse AU or (especially) [livejournal.com profile] winkingstar's excellent idea about John the English major and Rodney the science geek share library carrel space and flirt with each other in adorable ways. For the boys, it would of course work best without all references to "she" and "her", but such is life.

The Astronomer and the Poet

Somtimes it is impossible to know how things work. )

My life is kind of a stressful mess at the moment, but we'll get there. Also, just noticed that we still had the BBC, so I got to catch the end of old episode of "Torchwood" and sheesh, John Barrowman is pretty. Of course, he can be pretty silly, too. But hot like a hot thing. Especially his real accent (this is from a miniseries type thing where he explore the idea of what makes him gay and goes home to talk to his parents and this part especially is kind of adorable).

To conclude: Mmm, John Barrowman.

Title: Overflow (an Elementary!verse story)
Fandom: Stargate Atlantis
Word Count: 937
Summary: “If I had my life to live over again, I’d be a plumber.” - Albert Einstein
Notes: Sometimes real life is the best inspiration :o) Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] winkingstar for the awesome beta-suggestions and anything else that is still wrong is totally my fault. Hope you enjoy yet another view of our boys in action. I see this as coming pre-Lips and Hearts (for more thinking, see my "precise" timeline).

Fandom: Stargate Atlantis
Word Count: 3,088
Warnings: Parental death, grief.
Summary: "Mother is the name of God on the lips and hearts of all children." - The Crow
Notes: I started writing this on Mother's Day, and time got away from me. It would have been a great though achy piece for the Sunday [livejournal.com profile] mcsmooch 'fest, but time got away from me. Finally, I meant to finish it for [livejournal.com profile] sheafrotherdon's birthday... but time got AWAY from me. Finally, I decided to take time into my own hands. Thusly, dedicated (heee, get it? dediCATEd?) to all of those things, but especially [livejournal.com profile] sheafrotherdon, 'cause she rocks. Any mistakes are my fault. The boys (and the kids) aren't mine. ETA: Belated and happy thanks to [livejournal.com profile] beadattitude and [livejournal.com profile] winkingstar for the grammar nitpicks, which are always love!

Lips and Hearts )
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (I have not found the science mcshep)
When/how/why did John's mother die? Is she even dead? I feel like this has been absorbed into my own personal fanon and I don't have any basis or facts of anything to back it up. Anyone? Theories?

Not that I really need to know for... literary purposes. Of course not.

So, really, anything from "hey, he mentions it in episode X, it was so sad!" to "for no real reason, I believe that Y happened..." would be awesome!

Thankee, sai(s) XD
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Always got your back McShep)
So I (and hopefully you) have been enjoying reading the many fics for both the Away and Home Teams during this year's [livejournal.com profile] mcshep_match fest. Basically, teams of writers work with either the concept of lovely McShep "Home" or "Away" (whatever they take that to mean) as well as working against a member of the other team with smaller prompts. Wow, that doesn't really make much sense, but really it's just a glorious wallowing in awesome fic. I will be linking to all of them here, and after the BIG REVEAL, I can put why I liked them and also real author days.

Good day :o)
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Default)
I slept in for a long time, it was kind of awesome. And now Younger Sister is back from her weekend in The City and a new week can begin. In slightly more exciting news, [livejournal.com profile] mcshep_match is open! There is already the first pair of fics posted for the prompt "Thief in the Night". Very cool. I love fics.

Also, if you are jealous and wishing that you too could be part of the awesomeness that is the Away Team this fic challenge, they're still looking for BACKUP WRITERS here.

Maybe I'll say yes. I'm a glutton for last-minute fic scrambling ;o)

Also, there are approximately a million books I want to buy right now. Get thee to a nunnery library!*

*While I used to buy lots of books (and wow, now OWN lots of books, who'd have thought?) I've noticed that because I read so fast it is kind of financially stupid to buy a book that I will finish in a day or two. Thus, the library is awesome. Of course, there's always those pesky late fees because me and being on time never quite meet...
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Always got your back McShep)
So I meant to rec this last night but I forgot. [livejournal.com profile] tropes mentioned this fic after she and [livejournal.com profile] indy_go went and saw Iron Man (oh, RDJ, you are awesome and I will have to see this soon. Today. Tomorrow. SOON.) Seeing as the last time she talked about a story of [livejournal.com profile] sardonicsmiley's I lost most of my day to the brilliance that was "Sophomore Slump" (a Sky High/SGA fusion thing that is achy and scary and cute and genius), I ran over there and read it.

At 2am, I finally went to bed. So now I bring you "Unconventional Heroism" by [livejournal.com profile] sardonicsmiley in all of its parts and John/Rodney glory XD XD

Unconventional Heroism (R, John/Rodney, various, AU (duh?))

Genius billionaire Rodney McKay has his share of secrets, investigative reporter John Sheppard is determined to get to the bottom of them. He’d also like to figure out who the hell the man in the metal suit that keeps saving his life is.

* Part 1
* Part 2
* Part 3

And, because I mentioned it:

Sophomore Slump (dark PG-13, John/Rodney, Teyla/Carson, Ronon/Weir, various) - listed here or in parts below.

Being a teenage superhero kind of sucks, actually.

** Part 1
** Part 2
** Part 3
** Part 4
** Part 5
** Part 6

***It's continued in Dog Days with part 1 here. Apologies for posting a WiP, but I love this whole story to tiny bits.

So... two (three?) recs for the price of one? Hee. Off to go do some New Yorky things, because it's lame to sit about in the apartment all day. Happy Wednesday, everyone!
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Boys in uniform John Lorne)
Here's my Remix fic in its own special link. I had a pretty good time digging through [livejournal.com profile] wickedwords's stories, and chose "Jumper Lesson" because I was interested in writing Lorne fic and this looked like a great jumping off point. You can read the Remix website's link here, or just click on the cut tag below.

Title: Determined (Soldier Boy Remix)

Summary: So when General Landry welcomes you into his office to sit down, you’re not too surprised that the next words out of his mouth are, “ever heard of Atlantis, Major Lorne?”
Rating: PG
Fandom: Stargate Atlantis
Word Count: 1,200 or so.
Characters: Major Evan Lorne, Carson Beckett, Rodney, John, Miko, mentions of others
Warnings: Character death, both vague and specific.
Spoilers: Through mid-season three.
Notes: None of these people belong to me. Written for Remix Redux VI, from the story The Jumper Lesson by [livejournal.com profile] wickedwords. Enjoy, and any feedback is greatly appreciated.

You learned about the basics of genetics along with the rest of your freshman biology class, so when you get pulled into a briefing at the SGC because of some new type of gene they’ve discovered, it doesn’t surprise you half as much as it might. )

Thoughts: So yeah, I really like the story, which is probably a good sign XD I liked The Jumper Lesson a lot;
and cut in case you don't care about why I picked the story and other connected blatherings. )
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Boys in uniform John Lorne)
Today is the day of the big Remix reveal! Of course, I've been working (and lazy, don't forget the lazy) so any and all dates and deadlines fall out of my head. But yes, I wrote a story, it was awesome!

First, my story First Monday got remixed by [livejournal.com profile] darsynia into Acceptable Risk (the Slow Build Remix) and is awesome and hot, so go tell them what a wonderful job they did!

And THEN, I had the awesome opportunity to play with a story by [livejournal.com profile] wickedwords, so I took Jumper Lesson and made Determined (Soldier Boy Remix). I love the whole idea of the gene and how it changes you (oh, SGA science, you are awesome), and Lorne's fear in the original that it wouldn't work right. So I played with that, and how that kind of difference (and the difference that structures the community of Atlantis) kind of works. And made it second person, which was kind of fun. Go read all her stuff, though, because it's all super cute and awsome. I love Lorne to bits; might have to write more fic for him. *cuddles*

I will repost my story on here later today, and update my fic list (helpfully under Flya.fic heeee, I am funny) on the sidebar.

For now, I am off to do some dishes and generally tidy, most likely. Also, Tivo is recording "Sunday" which will be painfully awesome to watch later.

To conclude, it is almost 80 outside. Woohoo, happy Saturday!
