flyakate: scene from the Philadelphia Story (Mike is in awe of CK Dexter Haven)
Apparently my fandomness is merely yearly, as the last time I posted was a few days/weeks later than now. Still, it is time for the Yuletide rec list! I totally failed at signing up to write a fic, but I made it onto the pinch hit list and wrote an awesome twisty funky little story that I will no doubt tell you about later. For now, on to the reccomendations!

Recs from The Giver, The Stand, V for Vedetta, Dead Poets Society, Elementary, and more  )
flyakate: Callum Keith Rennie's head (OMG squee RayK)
The nice thing about the beginning of a new year is that there is always some change in energy, a feeling that bygones should go by, mistakes forgiven, and that all the things that need to be accomplished, can. Kind of fun.

Yuletide Excitement:

This year I got to write in American Gods and since one of the requests was more about any of the gods we meet, I wrote:
In the Land of Fire and Dreams, which was lots of fun to write not only because of my love of the slightly pretentious second person narrative voice but also because I got to poke around and learn lots of random things about early Slavic religion (granted, it was on Wikipedia and similar, so I could be wrong on... all of it). And I got to reference the Great Chicago Fire, which makes my little Diogenes Boys heart happy.

I received
but for the endless ifs by kittu9, which is an amazing story of Bloom and Penelope post-The Brothers Bloom, where they are awkward and real and full of adorableness with each other in a lovely jagged and true kind of way. And there is house renovation! HGTV would get a total kick out of reno-ing with Bloom and Penelope!

And now, some amazing Yuletide recs!

Detailed recs from American Gods, Jane Austen's Fight Club, Grimm, Sahara, The Holiday, Clueless, Song of Ice & Fire, Mary Poppins, Aladdin, Chaos Walking trilogy and Muppet Show/Alton Brown RPF )

And, because January comes right after December (same every year!) I had a birthday! My friends threw me a party and it was awesome and filled with cake and presents. I had what felt like 800 birthday celebrations, between my friends and various groupings of my family. Love it.

I've been busy with work (tutoring and setting up the possibility of an early morning aide in kindergarten, oh and reading all the applications ever) but right now I have the cold of doom. Which means that instead of being productive I've been watching bad tv movies on Lifetime (I've learned way too much about teen issues today) and coding the heck out of this.

Oh, almost forgot, if you haven't seen it you should go check out my dashed off "what if Arthur/Eames were on Facebook?" fic that got 300 hits in a day and half. Inception is still the new black, friends. Forgotten how intense writing in popular fandoms in in regards to feedback. So, go see
The Power of Social Media, it amuses me.

As previously stated, I am
[personal profile] flyakate  at DW, add me!

Ok, this post has been sitting on my computer for 800 days, finally posting it. Yay.

flyakate: Rodney McKay in an orange fleece feeling victorious (flawless Rodney victory)
Hi everybody, so I was wandering around AAO3, like you do, adding in old fics and fibrillating about my Yuletide sign-up and I found that someone had pod booked the entirety of my Elementary!verse AU where John teaches 2nd grade and Rodney is a college professor and they are all kinds of adorable together.

So if you are looking for an hour of adorableness to listen to, go download the podbook here, and marvel at the awesomeness of [livejournal.com profile] winkingstar, [livejournal.com profile] rhea314 and [livejournal.com profile] bessyboo!

Aww, man, it's been too long since I've thought of those stories. Makes me want to brush off the almost-finished story in that 'verse that I've had kicking around forever and finally post it. Hey, it could happen.

:o)
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Definitely w00t Hobbes)
Ok, probably need to have some actual full of sense and usefulness post soon, but only time for this piece of awesome:

Lions and Tigers by [livejournal.com profile] starlingthefool (Arthur/Eames, R, crossover with Calvin & Hobbes which is way less sketchy than that sounds)

What were you like as a kid?” Eames asks him.
“Quiet,” Arthur says. “I lived in my head a lot. You?”
“I did too,” Eames replies. “Only I was never quiet about it.”

A story about growing up, sort of.

---

Hot and perfect. Would blather more but that gives it away. Genius.
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Eureka OT3)
It's finally the magic day where we get to find out who wrote what (and perhaps why). I wrote:

In Case of Emergency, Head Towards the Nearest Exit
Eureka; Jack and Nathan; PG; 2,861 words
Everyone's set to celebrate Stark's miraculous return to Eureka. But nothing, even a simply party, can actually go as planned in Eureka.

My recipient wanted what everyone secretly wants: a chance for Nathan to be back in Eureka and solve things with Jack, snarking all the way. They also spoke of a love of all the made up science (overly cold ice cores that take over Eureka! Intelligence draining chicken breasts? I mean, come on!) that they have. So, having Fargo's computer program somehow merge with Henry's building program? No problem! I have a huge fondness for writing Jack (I can totally see his hand gestures and facial expressions, it's bizarre) and gosh, he and Nathan were amazing together. Go, read! Enjoy! If you read my other fic (with the amazing snowstorm! It was awesome!) I continue my theme of all the ridiculous paperwork that Jack has to no doubt fill out after all of these (because every government agency has paperwork, even in Eureka).

It's set in the gap between the end of season 3 and the beginning of season 4 (clearly in watching canon there has to have been a time gap between the two) so it doesn't require any rewriting of canon (though you know that Stark and Grant would be soooo amazingly snarky at each other too! It would be something Jack and Nathan could bond over!)

*

I received:

Unmasking
V for Vendetta; Evey/V; R; 3,117 words
Evey and Finch are going through papers connected to V’s life and legacy, and it makes Evey think back to an evening she never told anyone about.

I love this! It takes all the twisty, complicated stories that people tell about each other and places Evey and Finch in V's compound going through his papers. The memory that Evey is reminded of (and the resulting Evey/V) is fascinating and I can totally see this as a deleted scene from canon.

*

So many good fics, so little time. A few recs:

Ever wanted to cross Anthony Bordain with Narnia? Well, now you can: No Reservations: Narnia. PURE GENIUS.

cooking shows + Cooks Illustrated + Muppets = awesome. Otherwise known as Cooks llustrated vs. the Holidays; or Science: It Works

A plethora of gorgeously creepy and terrifying stories set in the Gaiman universe of A Study in Scarlet: here

What You See Is What You Get (If You're Looking Hard Enough): a stunning Mentalist steampunk AU with witches, wizards, empaths and telepaths, oh my!

A story that slots in perfectly with the rest of the Chronicles of Amber, in all their backstabby, coniving, convoluted glory - Breaking Patterns. And, more cracktastically, A Unicornmas Dinner with the Amber Royal Family. OMG so funny.

Hoping everyone had a lovely holiday--mine was full of family stuff (dramatic and otherwise) and trying to catch up on sleep. I've been working super long hours both at subbing and tutoring AND application reading, so my LJ presence has been kind of crap. Hopefully that will change, because I need to squee with everyone about Hawaii Five-O (go read the hotness at [livejournal.com profile] kissemdanno)! And finally catching up on Criminal Minds! (sheesh, they've gotten so CREEPY)

Happy beginning of 2011, all!
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Wrapped up in books)
I've been talking about several fics that I NEED to link, and instead of the half-assed links post from a week ago, I instead reworked that into a more comprehensive and coherent list here. Enjoy!

* Of locker rooms and lunch dates by [livejournal.com profile] zeldaophelia (CSI: NY; PG-13; 4,933 words)
Flack/Angell. One version of how they finally hooked up.

A series of fics about how Don and Jess got together. All kinds of adorable. I'm still enough behind that I need to see more of the episodes with the two of them (and ignore the season finale of great woe, lalalala) but I love the characterization of Jess here as someone who can put up with Flack's snark and dish it right back. Cute.

* my life's come off its tracks by [livejournal.com profile] mimblexwimble (Supernatural pre-series AU; PG-13; ~29,000 words)
Dean tells her, things are going fine, yeah he got into a fight and no, he doesn’t want to talk about it. He’s getting better and better at this sign language thing. He looks at her brightly. Big smile. Opens his swollen eye as wide as it can go.

Ouch, shit.

Gorgeously written and paced. I would love to see later pre-canon or even canon written in this 'verse. Perfect nailing of voices with the kids and the adults (Bobby! Pastor Jim!) even when it kind of break your heart. Hilarious and sad all at once.

* Empty Spaces by [livejournal.com profile] darkmagic_luvr (CSI NY/Criminal Minds semi-AU; PG-13/R; 13,200 words)
There's a serial killer in the suburbs of New York and the BAU has been requested to provide a profile. The NYPD and the BAU decide to collaborate, sending an FBI agent and a senior detective undercover, posing as a married couple, fitting the same criteria of the pervious victims. Don Flack and Emily Prentiss haven't seen each other in years, but now, seeing as they have to pretend to be married, they'll be seeing a lot of each other.

I know you are shocked (or not at all) that I am behind this story ;o) I'm sorry, but can we just talk about how hot the idea of Don and Emily would be? I love the idea that they met and had a relationship (even though I'm not sure I bought Prentiss logic in the story about why they broke up but whatever, I guess we needed it for plot reasons) and Garcia in this is perfect and spot on. Honestly I enjoyed it as much for the mental images (*grin*) as the story, which was an interesting casefile.

*(Not Your) Superman Tonight by [livejournal.com profile] torakowalski (Multi-bandom AU; NC-17; 37,000 words)
Brian scratches his neck. "This is the NSA," he says, "The National Security Administration. They're feds."

Bob raises his eyebrows, all no, really?

Brian winces. "They employ telepaths. Like Asher and-" me. He can't say it. He folds his arms. "It's not as weird as it sounds."

Even if you're not a bandom fan, this story is all kinds of fascinating. It takes the premise of the movie Thoughtcrimes (mmm, Joe Flannigan as an FBI agent) and blurs it nicely with actual bandom (hey, turns out it's hard to manage a band and be telepathic at the same time, who knew?) and it's funny and sharp and violent and I wish it were a movie because it'd be awesome.

* Small Town by [livejournal.com profile] ashinae and [livejournal.com profile] linden_jay. (Sports Night AU; NC-17; 41,750 words)
Welcome to Port Bowmore, Nova Scotia. Population 700.

Dan and Casey, roommates since college, co-manage the town's sporting goods store. Dan (who is not-so-secretly in love with Casey) spends most of his time hunting the local longshoremen. Casey (who is very secretly in love with Dan) is sleeping with Sally Sasser, the town's ambulance chasing lawyer. When Bobby Bernstein comes to town to recruit Dan for a GM position at SportChek in Halifax, Casey has to confront his feelings for Dan, or lose him to the 'big city'.

Hot and hilarious and witty enough that it sounds straight out of a Sorkin script. Despite the shift in universe, this is still totally Danny and Casey and the rest; the boys still suck at communicating about anything, and Dana still rules all. Genius.
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Never too old for this Hotch and Rossi C)
The Criminal Minds Fan Fic Awards are in the voting phase. If you are not a complete idiot like me (who pressed some wrong button and "completed" the survey without ever actually voting, how irritating) you should go vote! I've read many of these (and recced some before) but God, these are all genius!

Stories I'd forgotten about (the one where Prentiss runs into Flack in a bar! How cute would they be together! Or New Year: scorching Reid/Prentiss, anyone?) or ones I'd never read (such as Upward Over the Mountain, where Rossi hilariously and perfectly plots to get Hotch to admit he's into Reid, with a spot on Reid as well) and I promise you many hours of reading and re-reading.

So go, before I continue on this overly exclamation-pointed enthusiastic rant about the awesomeness. ( : angsty but awesome Rossi/Prentiss! Other things that I would link but instead read so now it is 2am!)

Sheesh, read these already, I need to go to bed ;o)
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Always got your back McShep)
This is really a link to a bunch of links: [livejournal.com profile] elderwitty compiled a mountain of code to make a linked version of [livejournal.com profile] anonymoouse's amazing list of McShep AUs, sorted by John's occupation. Many of them are stories I've read before (some recced here, actually) and I'm very excited to read the ones that are new to me. So should you!

Younger Sister and I went and saw Fantastic Mr. Fox, which was quirky and amusing and very much in the vein of Wes Anderson's other movies. I hadn't read the source material in quite some time, so whatever differences/additions (for example, Dahl isn't quite so dry in his humor as Wes Anderson, though there are extreme similarities that made it work for me) weren't noticeable to me. George Clooney does a great job with humor, in my opinion. He was misused as a romantic lead, IMO, he's much quirkier than you'd think.

*The subject line comes from the the poem "Cherry Stones" by A.A. Milne:

Tinker, tailor, soldier, sailor, rich man, poor man, beggar man, thief,
Or what about a cowboy, policeman, jailer, engine driver, or a pirate chief?
Or what about a ploughman or a keeper at the zoo,
Or what about a circus man who lets the people through?
Or the man who takes the pennies on the roundabouts and swings,
Or the man who plays the organ or the other man who sings?
Or What about the rabbit man with rabbits in his pockets
And what about a rocket man who's always making rockets?
Oh it's such a lot of things there are and such a lot to be
That there's always lots of cherries on my little cherry tree

It kind of wants me to take the poem and write a whole mess of drabbles of the AU variety. Any suggestions? (Bonus points for making Reid into a pirate chief or John and Rodney as an organ playing singing duo! Bones and Booth work for the zoo? The possibilities are endless! hahahaha)
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Circle complete by another's happiness S)
Christmas morning was late in the Flyakate family household, which worked out just fine. We also took the time to watch everyone else open up a present so that it stretched out the actual present-opening time quite nicely. I am greatly excited because not only did I get a lovely new messenger bag (that I had picked out from Macy's known about) and Bones season 2, but a hilarious spatula shaped like a gingerbread man, a "Cookie Field Guild" and "Muffin Bible" from Older Sister, one of those awesome plunger measuring cups (though not this one) and a pastry board from Younger Sister, an "Interactive Sherlock Holmes mystery" from Older Brother and...

A KITCHEN AID MIXER!!! See how pretty?

I already have made cookies using it (or rather, using Mom's, so mine can stay in its box for the trek back North when I go) and made delicious gingerbread cookies ALL BY MYSELF (though Younger Sister was instrumental in optimizing the cookie cutter spacing and insuring that I had a system for chilling the dough the longest (she likes to organize things, what can I say?)

And Pete the cat got catnip and was hilarious.

But I also got [livejournal.com profile] yuletide stories! Not one. Not even two. THREE WHOLE STORIES, which I will tell you about:

* Comfort (Lie to Me, Gillian/Cal, PG-13) is a lovely look at the true affection that the two of them have for each other and how they lean on each other after a hard case.

* Unwind (Lie to Me, Loker/Torres, PG-13) is a companion story (eee!) where Loker and Torres have a very in-character discussion about why they do what they do with some UST (which might become resolved, hard to say). Very cute and I loved it too!

Also (because the world and Yuletide writers love me):

* can't steal happiness (Mary Russell - LR King, Holmes and Rusell, G) which explains how Mary learns how to pick pockets and hold her own in a discussion with Holmes. The author seemed worried that it didn't fit the timeline, but I have no problem believing that Holmes would let Russell help on a case, even early in their relationship. Lovely and sounds like a lost bit of the novels.

Also, my recipient liked their story! Woo!

So, anyone want a muffin recipe? Or short drabble of your choice in the fandoms I know? (Relatedly, apparently [livejournal.com profile] sga_santa is having drabble madness until January 1st, open to all! Perhaps Elementary!verse boys will have to make an appearance...) I am open to suggestions!

:o) Happy holidays!
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Stu and Larry are my fake boyfriends)
Somehow I never actually posted links to these, but in all the buzz of signing up for [livejournal.com profile] yuletide (you have until tomorrow! Do it!) I realized that I never posted the fics that I received in past years. How ungrateful of me!

2007: Unfinished (PG-13, It) A post-novel pitch perfect story where Ritchie tries to find some answers and does, of a sort. Gave me chills and a case of the creeps, which is about perfect, really ;o)

2008: At Old Tom's Place (G, The Stand) I love the universe of this book, despite the obvious depressing nature of the post-apocalyptic setting. Set post-novel, this story deals with Tom's friendship with Nick and Stu and how the things we leave behind are more than just stuff. Adorable and a little eerie.

I've successfully signed up for Yuletide... now I just need to write a "Dear Yuletide Writer" letter. Excited to see what I get!
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Stu and Larry are my fake boyfriends)
I'd forgotten how much I enjoyed the Black Irish inherent hotness of black hair and bright blue eyes. I periodically record episodes of CSI: NY and I've discovered (re-discovered?) not only am I still a huge fan of Gary Sinise, but Eddie Cahill--he plays a detective on the show and is awesomely sarcastic and New Yorkishly accented--has these stunning blue eyes that take me back to countless Saturday nights watching The Practice with Dylan McDermott and being mesmerized by just how PRETTY he was.

So that was a happy place realization... which then meant that I wandered off onto the internet and read lots of fabulous stories in a universe where the New York CSI department instead investigates supernatural crime and it's creepy and hot. So go explore [livejournal.com profile] stellaluna_'s BSI'verse. This made me wonder how that would work for our boys and girls in Criminal Minds... which meant that I lost a few hours in [livejournal.com profile] amichevole's WiP story where Prentiss is a vampire and Morgan is a werewolf. Oh! Which reminds me of the awesome [livejournal.com profile] mcshep_match story where John Sheppard just happens to be a were-mountain lion. Hey, it happens? At least it does in Where the Brave Dare Not Go by [livejournal.com profile] telesilla XD

This icon strikes me as highly appropriate, even though Adam Storke is not Eddie Cahill (though might also have the same coloring, so it still kind of works, and I was such a Larry fangirl from The Stand, oh goodness).

And I've been working on posting this since yesterday (when I lost half the night to CSI: NY fanfic, man, I don't have time to watch a new show, knock it off, brain) so I should post it now.

Don't even get me started on accents, sheesh, Simon Baker has this awesome Australian accent and is so cheery and blond and smiley, it totally makes every episode of The Mentalist (though he does act "American", which makes me want there to be an episode where he has to trick someone by pretending to be Australian... please?)
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Never too old for this Hotch and Rossi C)
Alive and well and back in the West... I've been more of a reader than an updater lately, as you have no doubt noticed. However! Tonight was the night we have all been waiting for--the season premiere of Criminal Minds!

I'm sure I will have more coherent thoughts later, but I have to go to bed because I'm teaching third grade for the next two days and yeesh I am sleepy. So here they are, unedited and probably a little silly, but the thoughts I had about the episode as it happened. I did fix typos (damn show, moving so fast that I couldn't get a full sentence out!) Thus, I give you spoilers and rambling and I apologize if this makes no sense for Nameless, Faceless )

...somewhere I turned into a vague Hotch/Prentiss shipper and didn't notice. When I'm not a Rossi/Hotch one. So maybe I'll go pretend that there is h/c snuggles in this world, like when Prentiss takes care of Hotch in With Both Hands (eventual NC-17) by [livejournal.com profile] innerslytherin and [livejournal.com profile] severity_softly. Though in "reality", I feel this may not happen. Still, writers can dream :o)

flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Supernatural Dean Sam Mischief)
So, in one of those "I started out on someone's journal and eight clicks away ended up here" kind of moments, I found an amazing and awesome and long AU of the first season of Supernatural and have to tell you all about it.

Metaphysical by [livejournal.com profile] cjmarlowe (AU, gen, R for violence/language, ~80,000 words) - Three years after he turned in his horse and scattergun for frock coats and textbooks, Sam Winchester is tracked down to upstart Stanford University by his estranged brother Dean, who arrives with the news that their father has gone missing. His disappearance turns out to be only the first of a series of events that takes them all the way across an alternate America circa 1905, from the death of Sam's girlfriend to a haunting in Nebraska, from demonic omens to spiritualists to hijacked airships, and inevitably a long-delayed trip home.

John Winchester isn't anxious to be found, but his sons are convinced that the family is stronger together than apart and don't let anything stand in the way of their pursuit. Especially once they realize that pursuing their father means staying on the trail of the demon who killed their mother. A demon who isn't finished with the Winchesters just yet.

Gotta love the idea of a steampunk re-imagining of the first season (with art!), so go read it. And don't worry, it doesn't follow exactly to canon, so there will be enough surprises to keep your interest.

I made many to-do lists today and actually did a rough completion of all of them, which mostly means that I had lots of cleaning tasks that I did a haphazard job on. Except for the bathroom; that might be tomorrow's mission. But I can see my floor and the living room looks less like a bomb hit it (scattering pillows left and right) and the clean dishes are now in the cupboard like they belong (as opposed to sitting forlornly in the dishwasher, yearning for independent mobility) and I updated my links to Remix VII fic... not that that was a vital part of the list, but hey, progress.

In totally random news, want to name Laurie R. King's next Holmes/Russel mystery? You can! XD

Just Breathe (The Artifact of Vision Remix) [Stargate: Atlantis, John/Rodney, PG] by the awesomely talented [livejournal.com profile] crysothemis

And a rec that you should read...

This story made today top yesterday (where the waiter and busboy of our restaurant asked Younger Sister if she was Ellen Page from Juno), so in other words, this weekend was awesome (despite cold of Impending Doom)

XD
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Stars get in your eyes John)
Most of my brain has been taken up with either dogsitting (a week ago, for a week, cuuuuuuuuute cocker spaniel who had squeaky snores, it was awesome) and summer camp (middle schoolers who are funny and tiring). I've also been catching up on Bones (aw, David Boreanaz is adorable). I'm up to "The Cinderella in the Cardboard" and (spoilers for plot twists in S4). ) I really enjoy the random rotation of interns, weirdly enough. Especially Mr. Nigel Murray, who(m?) I find extremely adorable. I feel like someone has made icons with a quizzical looking MNM (as it were) and now I can't find them. Bummer.

Today, Remix Redux 7 is open for reading! My original writer seems to like the remix I wrote, which is excellent. Someone (who is awesome and still anonymous until the 26th) took Not So Artificial and made Just Breathe (The Artifact of Vision Remix) which is hot and adorable and really shows how John and Rodney are sometimes so great together... and yet so inarticulate together. *smushes them*

I had a great time reading in all the fandoms that I know, which is always fun. Go! Read!

My sister and I watched the finale for Criminal Minds (again, for me) which I already griped about here. I've also been reading lots of Prentiss/Rossi, which is sort of connected (by the transitive theory of awesome? I dunno)... :o)
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Never too old for this Hotch and Rossi C)
Okay, so a while ago I was hit with the idea that the Taylor Swift song You Belong with Me (warning, the link sings) is totally a Hotch/Rossi song, where Rossi is lamenting that Hotch is always stuck on the phone with Haley, and Haley is complainy and why doesn't Hotch notice that Rossi has always been there for him in blond pigtails? Seriously, it cracks me up and I can totally see this as a fanvid (you know that there are way too many good shots of Thomas Gibson for "he has a smile that can light up the whole town")

Add to this the fact that I woke up this morning from a dream in which Reid (and the gang) were all on either Top Chef or Project Runway (which reminds me that if you haven't read John Sheppard's Guide to Surviving Project Runway it is amazing and hilarious and you should) and poor Reid was having some kind of crisis and talking on the phone to Prentiss.

-

So that's the state of my brain right now. How's with yours? Also, summer camp started and my campers are hilarious and nice and I just hope I can think of a whole bunch of things to do with them! :o)
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Kiss kiss bang bang Fraser/Kowalski)
It has been months since I've done this, but here: have the All Fic Edition of the Rec Triad.

Rec Triad June 2009

I've been catching up on The Mentalist, which is an adorably quirky show with fun characters about a mentalist who uses his crazy observational skills (and charming adorable sexiness personality) to help solve crime. If you watch the show, you will enjoy this fic immensely: Red Tables Turning. Don't be alarmed by its placement on fanfiction.net--although after reading this one I totally took a spin through some more and woah, at times it was painful, yet hilarious. But, the story linked above gives a great outside view of Patrick Jane and how he acts when our favorite guys from the BAU show up to talk about Red John. I was not expecting the crossover insanity, and it was fun. Only two chapters, but I'd love a long, meaty look at how they'd help finally (I mean, seriously, guys, on Criminal Minds they find serial killers all the time in approximately 40 minutes, you haven't done it in 23 episodes!)

In a different vein, apparently I not only enjoy believable and interesting AU ideas (whether this means "and Hotch and Rossi have been together since he divorced Haley, trufax" or "hey, the BAU is all in the circus!"*) I just read a bandom AU fic (shut up, don't judge me) where Professor Gerard falls for Frank his hot TA (these guys are all from My Chemical Romance, fyi) which was tons of fun and cute. So go read [livejournal.com profile] jezrana's "In Which Gerard Is a Quirky College Professor and Frank Is the Best TA Ever", parts 1, 2, and 3 (with more drabbles here).

This got me thinking about other Professor!AUs, which reminded me that I loved the Due South version where Fraser and Kowalski teach English Lit (Punk Academic); this love of professor/colleague/pretty much equal dynamic goes a long way towards explaining my own Elementary!verse stories.

But there has to be a story where John shows up as Rodney's crazy-haired TA who seems to have no background in the hard sciences but then busts out with some genius theory during TA hours (which Rodney monitors, just to make sure it wouldn't be a totaly disaster) and the way John's hands sketch the arcs of a mathematical curve makes Rodney's throat dry. Isn't there one? I have such a great mental image of this... help me out, guys!

*Not that there is a BAU-inna-circus!AU, but there definitely should be. Think of it: Reid wows as the Smartest Man in the World! Prentiss doing gymnastics atop a horse, or something! Morgan the Strong Man! Garcia as the awesome girl behind the scenes! Hotch as the hard-working and stressed owner of the circus and Rossi as the old co-owner that left years ago after a disastrous show but is back now for some "unfinished business"! I think this could work well...
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Fraser's sorrowful secret)
So the season premiere of Jon and Kate Plus 8 kind of broke my heart. I guess these are spoilers, but it's not like they haven't been the cover of the Equirer... )

I finally saw the season finale of Criminal Minds and spoilers for To Hell... and Back )

On a not-really related topic, I totally forgot to rec the amazing Hotch-centric fic that I devoured a couple weeks ago. It was lovely, achy backstory for Hotch (that actually tried to make some kind of sense of the lack of math TPTB employed in constructing dates for Hotch's timeline. I'll go with "child prodigies for the win!" and leave it at that). Be warned, it is 14 parts long... so don't come crying to me when it is 4am and you are madly reading to see how it ends. It's very in keeping with the show (show-similar violence and angsty stress and death and not nice behavior... did I mention violence?) and really worth the read. So go wallow in Tilting at Windmills.

Okay, need to get to bed because I am teaching in the morning. But I had tasty tasty huevos rancheros for dinner and I made chocolate chips cookies (from the Nestle Tollhouse bag's back, naturally) and washed lots of dishes and even the shelves in the fridge because ew. Now if I could turn that razor-sharp cleaning instinct on my room, we'd really be cooking. Metaphorically.

XD
flyakate: Grouchy Kermit with text (Never too old for this Hotch and Rossi C)
I've finally taken the time to catch up (almost) to the current episodes of Criminal Minds and oh, SHOW. I heart you so much.

On top of this, I have been reading some excellent CM fic and thought I'd rec some of it for you all! After a binge of fic-reading a while back, I totally got behind the idea of Rossi/Prentiss (this is helped by the fact that Joe Montagna is both hot and awesome and totally Hotch's BFF, seriously) and some recent fic feels so much in line with canon that I keep blending the two together. So I bring you two (sort of three) recs that are NC-17, fair warning.

Cause of Snow (7,000 words; NC-17) by [livejournal.com profile] wojelah

Prentiss has a flat tire, no power, and a free weekend. Rossi has several spare bedrooms, wine, and a wood-burning stove. Emily's a little baffled, but she'd like the chance to enjoy the evening a little longer.

Total added bonus for this is to hear about Rossi's cool house, though obviously the best part is the hotness of Prentiss and Rossi.

Longest Way Round is the Shortest Way Home (13,000 words; NC-17) by [livejournal.com profile] smittywing & [livejournal.com profile] wojelah

A tag for 4.17: Demonology (which kicked ass, oh show, I love you so). “Think you're escaping and run into yourself. Longest way round is the shortest way home.” -- James Joyce

This is the one where I get confused where the awesome conversations of the episode stopped and this fic (or these fics, because really it's two pieces, one in each of their points of view) began. Bonus points for Rossi cooking Italian food.

And don't even get me started on the adorable potential of Hotch/JJ (in an AU where Will is not in the picture, like Inappropriate (But Unavoidable) (17,000; PG) by [livejournal.com profile] innerslytherin and [livejournal.com profile] severity_softly)... which leads me back into Rossi/Prentiss in that universe and really, now I recall why I have "lengthy yet believable aus" as one of my journal interests, right up there with "elaborate panfandom crossovers" because I will never stop telling you all how awesome Criminal Minds/Bones fic would be, though woah, I am behind in that show like crazy.
